Here is a real good way to truly screw-up the Japanese society more than it already is....bring in Walmart to take over the Dai-ei chain....
Lose all the small "inefficient" mom and pop stores and get rid of all that makes Japan what it is...real good idea....and replace everything Japanese with cheap imports from China and elsewhere, as if this already isn't done...because you know that once a Wal-mart type store hits the local scene, the mom and pop stores ain't gonna shape up, they are gonna go out of business and then there goes the neighborhood.... LOL
What they did with Nissan makes sense....this idea is counterproductive...

Commentator Ev Ehrlich thinks Wal-Mart's effort to acquire an interest in the Japanese retailer Daiei could be the best thing to reach Japan since baseball. He says Wal-Mart's retail practices could force other retailers -- especially mom-and-pop stores -- to shape up.

I am not sorry that McDonalds came to Japan. I remember, I had one of my best Birthdays in a McDonalds in Tokyo!! It was my 5th Birthday!

Anyway, I don't have anything against Walmart, I have shopped there in the US many times.
However, I do see the point that Walmart taking over will ruin the business of the "mom & pop stores" in Japan, which is sad for them, but this is how it works sadly.
We have already seen this trend, so it is not something new in Japan....so I can't believe it is a surprise for anyone. We have seen it with e.g. "Seven Eleven" stores mushrooming all over Japan, and other countries, especially in Europe, (although I haven't seen one in Britain...yet :? Instead they have "Alldays" and "24h Spar").

I don't know...but that's actually a good thing...the nightshop is a very good thing for me, cause when at night there is no chips, candy...or I'm picking up a movie or go to party etc.. I can buy at the 711

Was that "two years" part in direct connection to the McDonalds part? Or was it just a general observation that things can change a lot in two years?

I say bring Wal-Mart on. In case no one has noticed, the death of the mom-n-pop store has already happened. And the murderer was all these damned convenience stores.

Oh man, if you want to put fear in me, mention the word Walmart and i'll cringe. We have one here in Illinois and they've been meaning to build it up into a superstore but they haven't. Whenever I go in there i get clostrophobia almost. All these people running around with carts acting like maniacs. None of them care if you are in the way, you have to dodge them. Crazy people coming from chicago and elsewhere shop in there when they visit this town. It's a very annoying store. Walmart in America had a bust a while ago if you didn't know. The Feds walked in and took out a good amount of the illegal aliens working, across America. Walmart should have been shut down because of this. Although they were not. I do not know why, but they are still up and running. Walmart is a very annoying store if you ask me though. A lot of the time you will see coworkers acting like complete idiots hugging each other and so forth. I'm was shopping in the electronics shop and there are these two coworkers hugging and messing around acting stupid. I think they should get fired, because when i asked them an electronics question they didn't 5h17. Walmart will put you in any department and it doesn't matter to them if you know anything about your department or not. The only thing i usually go there for is Roasted chicken,school supplies, and sometimes clothes. Other than that i hate it there.

that helped reduced oppotunity/disposal loss through co-own/managing
leader goods data with the vendors.... btw, jpn branch of 7-11, cash
cow then saved parent/head 7-11 of usa at the brink of bankru... that
was broadcasted by nhk progra... years ago...
 
Actually Wal-Mart has been scouting Japan for about ten years now...just been waiting for the right time to make the move I guess! I think that it will be a good thing, like Mike said the mom & pop stores have already faded...the only ones still making a living are doing so strictly out of loyalty.

This can be good and bad. It will help to destroy mom and pop stores, but like it or not Walmart has a variety of pretty useful stuff. It will be convient anyway.. Even if it is an evil corporation.. Heh.

Here In Maine....

Walmart has greeters who are usually elderly & or handicapped. This might be my chance at a job in Japan as an official greeter!

Well Walmart is a good thing in the US, it could really screw up the Japanese economy. It will put the other retailers out of business. I once went in to purchase a Japanese Anime book, They told me that Anime wasnt a tagible media and that it never exsisted. So I asked them where the popular Anime shows were created they all said China and Korea. I personally think it would really wreak havoc uypon Japan, the place aint cheap at all. Take this opinion with a grain of salt, because I know I will differ from alot of people, in this Idea.

McDonalds, now that place is the grosset thing ever founded by American entrepeneurs, Here in Arizona, its a miracle if half the workers posses a Green Card (Legal permit for employment) or if they even speak english. I wont eat at the one near my house because my cousins got sick form eating there a few times. A few of my friends worked there and said they went through work crews like they were paper dolls. Yeah I give them credit for trying to immigrate here from their native lands, but its the undocumented migrants that are the ones making a bad name, for there countrymen who sift through the proper channels. Arizona law states that if a Resident see any illegal aliens attempting to enter the country through unofficial checkpoints that the viewer has the right to shoot on sight to kill, if possible and to infom the border patrol. Its a drastic measure I know but its the only way I guess.
 
You know what, I'm going to be an American donkey and go off on a limb. Let walmart go into Japan so that it can bring their economy down by taking down competitors with low prices and then raise them in the end. Go for it Wal-mart!

It will invite competition. If anything there is already an oversaturation of big chain department stores in Japan. This mum and dad shop talk confuses me. There not many here anyway.

Sounds about right. I thought most anime was done by non-jpanese animators these days, just like The Simpsons is animated by philipinos.
And not finding Anime and Manga in an American Walmart? Of course not. I seriously doubt stocking anything except the most popular (dragonball, pokemon) properties would hardly be profitable.

Rednecks are a worldwide phenomenon. No country has a monopoly on them.

Japan has more than its fair share. You just need to get around more and meet a broader cross-section of the population.

I've been in Wal-Mart once and only once, and I wasn't at all impressed. I can't understand what people see in the place, other than it sells stuff cheap, but the people employed there are paid peanuts as unions are verboten.

And yes, Wal-Mart's hardly as benevolent as the press clippings makes it out to be, pushing it's way into neighborhoods and driving mom and pop stores out of business with near ruthless abandon. being community friendly is not exactly number one with them.

On top of that, Wal-Mart stores require an almost obscene amount of land for both the building and parking, and land is hardly in abundance in Japan. You'd think the Japanese could do without the likes of Wal-Mart.
 
Wall-Mart is just plain wrong. We should be trying to get rid of them in our country--not spreading the disease to Japan!

Like has already been said, Walmart doesn't promote competition, it destroys it ruthlessly.

Although, the ones here in Savannah are starting to carry "real" anime in addition to DBZ and Pokemon. Definitely wouldn't have seen Vampire Hunter D or Cowboy Bebop in a Walmart five years ago.
 
Target also has a pretty big selection of anime(for around here) in their DVD department. I was kind of surprised.

Anyway...
