"An overweight prisoner in the United States is suing the authorities for not feeding him enough after he lost about seven stone (45kg) in jail.

Broderick Lloyd Laswell, who is awaiting trial for murder, dropped to 22 stone (140kg) after eight months inside the Arkansas prison.

He claims his vision has gone blurry while trying to exercise.

The prison says the meals average 3,000 calories a day - more than the US recommended daily intake for adults.

Laswell has filed a federal law suit complaining Benton County jail does not provide inmates with enough food.";

To be honest if i was him i would be grateful about the weight loss. He should be grateful that they even got fed a varied diet at all, in Thai prisons they are only obliged to feed the prisoners a small portion of rice and some fish heads. Considering that he was charged with fatally beating and stabbing a man and only served a pretty short sentence, i think he deserves the lean diet he got- prison is for punishment.

Ha, i can just imagine it- "Try the new diet craze, loose 22 stone with the new Punish the Pounds Prison (PPP) Diet! No need to exercise, simply sit on your arse in a cell and have people cook your meals for you why you shed off the pounds!" lol.

I haven't got a lot of sympathy for prisoners, but that's kind of an archaic viewpoint since the line that separates us and them can be so thin in so many cases. In general though, I would say that, regardless of how you got there, (unless you're on death row), I'd look at prison as an opportunity to reform yourself both mentally and physically before your release. So, along with the unlimited exercise and reading, why not throw in some weight loss?

Whatcha complainin' about there tubby??

Are we reading the same article? He hasn't served a sentence yet. He's still awaiting trial.
And what ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty?"

I haven't got a lot of sympathy for prisoners,

See above.

I agree that weight loss is usually nothing to complain about, but the prisons should provide a diet that will allow its prisoners to remain in reasonably good health, which it seems is not the case here. 187kg is humongous. I have a friend who is about 105 kg, and he consumes 6000 calories per day, so if this guy is getting 3000, he is practically starving.

Well he isn't innocent because the article says he's been charged with his crime and was sent to jail- this doesn't sound like he is innocent and still awaiting trial;

"Police say he has been charged with fatally beating and stabbing a man, the Associated Press news agency reported."

3000 calories a day is not practically starving- the minimum recommended amount of calories a day for a man to consume is 2500, so a prisoner getting 3000 calories a day is hardly starving. Maybe to a fat overweight American thats a lean diet, but it's what is advised. 6000cals a day is a huge amount to be consuming, does your friend happen to work out a lot etc?
The prisoner was being given a lot of food however its also possible that he simply was not eating everything he was been given because he did not like the taste of everything he was been given to eat, and thats why he lost so much weight- most people who do become very overweight become so because they become hooked on eating a limited variety of fattening foods, and so find it difficult to eat healthy stuff etc.

charge
6.to accuse formally or explicitly (usually fol. by with): They charged him with theft.

I'm not sure what you think the word charge means in this context, but a person is not officially guilty until they have been convicted. And yes, people can be placed in prison before they are convicted.

3000 calories certainly is sufficient for an average adult, but this man clearly is not of average size. He certainly could stand to lose a few pounds, but rapid weight loss is not healthy for anyone.

He claims his vision has gone blurry while trying to exercise.
Think himself lucky that his vision has only gone blurry. At 22 stone its a good thing that he hasn't got a numb arm and chest pains. I mean he was 29 stone before he went in. No sympathy for him, whether he is guilty or not. It's doing you good numbnuts!

No, they haven't provided this fat idiot with enough food. Don't give Mcdonalds in jail, they believe in a healthy diet, you know, fruit and vegetables. Probably hasn't seen an apple or carrot since he left school and the only potato he has ever seen are probably chips and crisps.
At least he was esay to catch. I bet he can't run far.

Just for our US members a 1 stone = 14lbs
For those in metric 2.2lbs = 1kg (roughly)

Yo, Mycernius!
Thanks for the translation for metric-challenged knuckleheads like me! :D

Meanwhile this idiot (currently around 308) should count his lucky stars he's getting three hots and a cot instead of complaining about not getting enough to eat. And this fool was heavier than that before going in the stir? Are you ****** kidding me? As far as I'm concerned, he should be starved further, just for bitching about his lot in life! But I can't say this clown got some ambulance chaser to file a lawsuit for him. I gots two words for this doofus----SHUT UP!!
