Defence US and Japan strengthen military alliance amid China threat

The United States and Japan have announced plans to significantly enhance their military alliance in response to growing tensions with China. Key elements of this strengthened partnership include the establishment of a joint military command under US leadership and increased cooperation in missile development. The new command structure aims to improve coordination and response capabilities in the face of potential crises. While focusing on China's aggressive actions in the East China and South China Seas, the alliance also acknowledges Russia and North Korea's threats. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to mutual defence in light of the escalating security environment.

One of the top issues cited was the East China Sea, which Japan and China both claim part of. The American and Japanese senior officials said their governments reiterated their strong opposition to China's "intensifying attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force or coercion."
