Hi, I'm listening to a story and there's a word here I just can't get.

A girl says to her boyfriend "I'll never forgive him for what he's done to you." The boy replies. "It couldn't be helped. 彼はこうすりがい(?)。 You mustn't blame him."

But こうすりがい (or any variant thereof I've tried) isn't a word or phrase I can find, so I must be hearing it wrong. But the speaker says it slowly and clearly and I'm struggling to figure out what I'm mishearing. コース___?

The man they're talking about betrayed him by turning him into the government. I thought it might be something to do with him being pressured to do it?

It could be! こうする and いがい were some of the possibilities I found, but it didn't make much sense to me and I've not come across いがい or how it's supposed to be used before. How would you translate it?

I just understood what you meant earlier. You're right! The pauses are so long I didn't think to connect them. I've never used いがい before, so breaking it down, is it

仕方がなかったんだ = it couldn't be helped/ there was no choice
こうするいがい = except (for him) to do that
?

I always assumed phrases like しょうがない and 仕方がない were stand alone phrases.

Oh, I've not heard that either! So would it be used like...

「赤ちゃんが見たくてしょうがない！」 = I really want to see the baby! (Because of what just happened here in England. )

「あなたに会いたくて仕方ない！」 = I'm eager to meet you!
