Understanding these Sentence types

Glenn, I understand nominalization of verbs. ( for me basic dictionary form + no ga or koto ga)
but let's I wanted to say. "Picking up heavy boxes makes my back hurt."
Attempt, 重い箱を持って上げるのは、私のこしが痛く。。。？？？？"負けた"
Not sure how to finish this sentence.

Usually you, at least I, would use "XXX box wo mochiagaru to watashi no koshi ga itaku naru (itaku natte kuru)" or the te form as a connector with this type of sentence. 重い箱を持ち上がるのは腰を痛める is another way of expressing it.

I also assumed that the explaination of the action that cause the back to hurt is given hence "koto" not being needed. maybe if I said "持ち上がること" koto ould be needed because it's a random act of lifting "something" the thing of lifting is the cause. Does that make sense?
I ask this because I have become acustom to using no koto or koto for almost all nomalized verbal sentences. when I see people or translations using no ha. So I want to understand the differences between the 2.

That looks fine at first glance. Also, you can say something like "Heavy boxes wo Mochiagaru no ha watashi no koshi wo itamu" (I think this is acceptable). Lifting heavy boxes causes a painful back or is painful for the small of the back).

Edit : I was just thinking that itameru is easier for me to understand as "cause pain" but does it require "ga" "koshi ga itamemasu?"

Ah itamu = to injure or cause pain. ok She did use that word but i get it confused alot with itaku (itai).

Below are two slightly different uses of "no wa" -- note the sentence ending 'koto' that becomes necessary in the first and 'kara' in the second.

日本の休みにしたいのは恋人に会うことです。(What I want to do on my Japanese vacation is meet my girlfriend).

先月、日本へ行けなかったのは仕事で忙しかったからです。(The reason I couldn't go to Japan last month is because I was busy with work).

Maybe 背中を痛ませる? It seems to be fine for the most part other than the part you're having problems with. But, as always, best to wait for epigene or someone more skilled to come along (sorry to always put the burden on you, epigene!).

Yeah, I sometimes hesitate to use the causitive form because a lot of times I don't think it's just too direct a translation although you're right that 痛める is just causes pain to (harms, pains), not literally "caused by" the lifting. And natives are of course the ultimate expert. And I'm not a doctor either but I also somehow agree with Damicci that 腰 (lower back, hip) tends to be more regular than 背中 for back pain or injury.

little background on tis attempt:
My girlfriend（Rieko-chan) likes that new song by madonna "Hung Up" but she doesn't understand the lyrics so I was helping her translate some of the lyrics but she wanted to use a online translator. And I was saying that the translator sucks.

英語と（も）日本語（も）が上手な人は訳してないといけません。sounds very normal and standard to me. The の after 人 is out of place because this isn't a verb and
誰 I think would imply one (the) person that is good at both.
