Typing in Japanese... problem

I have a Japanese laptop with an English version of Windows XP installed on it. I have Office XP (English) as well. I have set up computers to type in Japanese before, but not one with a Japanese keyboard. However, I figured that I would just set up the IME and choose the Japanese keyboard layout. The only thing is, when I went into Microsoft word and changed the language to Japanese, it would not type in Japanese. The option to reconvert romaji into Japanese was not there either. (That was how I typed in Japanese on my entirely English computer.) If anybody has any idea of how to get Word to accept type in Japanese as though it were a Japanese version, please let me know.

Which IME do you have? With Windows XP(English) and Office XP(English) you should have the IME you install from the Windows OS CDRom. (IME Standard 2002 v8.1 and / or Microsoft Natural Input 2002 v8.1 )

I'm honestly not sure which IME I have. It was installed with an English version of Windows XP by the person I bought it from. I did not recieved an English OS disc with it. There is a ghost file on a partition instead. However, I did recieve a Japanese OS disc with it. I don't think that helps my case, though.

As far as posting in a different forum, I see your point. Still, I have posted questions about my Japanese laptop (Sony Vaio TR5B) on this forum before and gotten good answers, so I figured it was worth a shot to post it on this forum.

What to do after clicking alt-shift

I had the same problem myself... Everytime I clicked Alt-Shift to change to Japanese, it still typed in English. You have to do an extra step. After changing to Japanese, look at the bottom right of your computer at the Taskbar. There should be a small JP to the left of your clock. To the right of "JP", should be some more buttons, a small keyboard, a red ball and the letter A. Click the letter A, and you should options for Hiragana, Katakana, etc. Click the one you want and continue on your way.

I have to do this everytime I want to write in Japanese.... I haven't figured out how to set Hiragana as the default... :banghead:

I rather suspect it isn't relevant to Kuro Matsuri's situation.

But I should be able to sort you out.

First note that when [jp] is selected
<ctrl>+<capslock> => hiragana
<alt>+<capslock> => katakana
\\ => back to 'Direct input'.

That should speed things up a little, however I also removed English as an input language. Having done this you never need to <shift>+<alt> to go between [jp] and [en] as you are always in [jp]. When you need to type English just use the [A] (direct input / ascii) option.

Note that there are a few drawbacks to this. Keys specific to your country like the Pound (UK currency) sign produce different characters but I soon got used to that.

Now if only I could get it to stop inputting Chinese kanji. But that's a problem for another thread.

Strangely enough, I couldn't find the tools button at first. However, while I was looking for it, I found what I needed. I don't even remember exactly what I did because I was searching for one thing and found another. Well, thank you for your immense indirect help!

Anyway, my laptop is now set up so that I can type directly in Kana. I don't have to type the romaji out and convert it to what I want anymore! I can also switch between English/Japanese and Full-width Hiragana/Full-width Katakana/Half-width Katakana/Kanji with single key presses! I like my Japanese keyboard. Of course, now I need to learn the kana layout of my keyboard, so that I don't need to hunt for the correct kana.
