Instead of having a whole operating system such as windows, mac OS, or linux on your computer... you can just have the Google Chrome browser on it. This invention is called:

Chromebook!!!

The price will probably be under 500$ or you can even rent one for 28$ a month.

It works like this, you have google chrome on it, and with google chrome you can download web applications so that you can control your documents, play games, share photos, watch videos, etc. Problem is... you can't really do anything with it without an internet connection (besides accessing some files and documents). You can't run windows apps, use other browsers and... because it is linked with your google account, google can spy even more on what we do.

What do you guys think? will it work, or is it too early to come out with this? Google has some great things: google earth, search engine, gmail, news, streetview (hey it's nice to see my house in Holland again), etc. But it also has a lot of flops will this be another one?

It's going to be a great computer and an evolution in regards to mobile computing, but users like myself have demands that cannot be met at this point in time with a novelty like a Chromebook. The problem is that many people think of these as computers or computer replacements. They can in fact be computer replacements if your needs are very simple, but they are in no way a general purpose computer. They were never even designed to be one. They were designed for a specific use, in this case web viewing and email. If you understand that before buying it you probably won't be disappointed but if you buy one with the intention that it will replace your laptop or desktop computer your going to have a painful time (unless you only surf the web and email).

That is precisely my issue with it! I use quite a bit of 3D modeling software, Photoshop, and I play a lot of games. I thought that "this will change the way we use computers" was a bit too far of a stretch for such a novelty. It'll be a nice mobile computer, but it doesn't do much for me! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

This just seems like a gimmick to me, and rather an expensive one. If the limited use was reflected in a low price then I might see the point, but for $500 you can buy a proper laptop that lets you do all this and more.

Specialist software is probably always going to be the spanner in the works when it comes to cloud computing. At the university I used to work at, they've been trying to implement virtual desktops for years without success, because of all the specialist software that's essential for just a handful of users, like the timetabling software I used, the electron microscope and telescope softwares in Physics, and the virtual dispensing suite in Pharmacy. I would have thought it will be a long time, if ever, before that kind of complex software will be feasible in a cloud.

This seems handy for those who only use the interwebs sure, but for people who are into editing (photo/video..etc), gaming (real gaming, not the gay flash games), this would be pointless and will always have the need for a Windows OS...and much of the PC users are gamers...ranging from your 6 year old cousin, to your teenage brother to you.

Linux users would not change their OS either, cuz theirs is FREE
