Ok, I'm in Mitaka-shi now and the water (like most areas of Tokyo) has an aftertaste that makes me feel like I'm drinking liquefied prostate cancer. Now, back in Sacramento where the water wells are contaminated with thyroid issue causing jet fuel, this is a bit ironic, but I do wonder about water standards here!

Seriously, does anyone know much about what the water standards are for Japan? If it has this bad of taste it can't be that good. I'm sure I'm not drinking minamata-disease level stuff, but I do wonder what is done with the water here if it still tastes this awful...

And you're on the West End ! And this isn't even the rainy season ! haha.

Tokyo water smells like chlorine, but I hear the purification waterworks systems piped in from the Tamagawa River are state of the art. Let it stand a while, boil, filter, or give the bugs in your stomach time to adjust when worried.

Yeah, but logic says water shouldn't take like sewage if it is purified and healthy!

Out here in the countryside of Hyogo, it tastes great. Being surrounded by mountains helps a bit, and the water is usually really cold when it runs down into the rivers. I use tap water for all my cooking and usually drink straight from the tap whenever I'm thirsty. After living in LA for so long, I was used to not drinking it unless it went through a Brita, but now I'll miss the freedom good tap water offers.

As for the guy saying there was no taste, and you couldn't tell it was treated... "bullshit"
