Subtitles or Dubbed ?

I realize that there is another thread (animes) with this topic as its subject - but I would be interested as to how everyone feels about "Subs or Dubs" with regard to movies in general?

Personally, I'm a subtitle man - like to hear the true voice and get the true emotion. My wife, on the other hand, hates subtitles and prefers listening to the most remarkable soundtracks !

yea subbed, dubbed always looks or sounds ridiculous and does spoil it.

It is even worse when you have seen the original language and then see the dubbed one, it completly messes with your head.

I remember seeing a Lupin III in American and it was so strange with the voices changed i had to stop watching it.

I hate dubbed. I saw Shaolin soccer in dubbed and subtitled. In the dubbed the movie is shorter and they take some of the best parts out plus the voices are lame. I would hate to see the Americans or whatever get their hands on Moon Child and dub Gackt's voice. O_____O Oh the horror it would be.

grrrr i love subs! my mate has the dubbed version of battle royale and crouching tiger hidden dragon..they suck!

By the way, the dialogue in subbed films and shows is more accurate and faithful to the original. When dubbing the dialogue has to be changed sometimes to match up with the mouth flaps, and you can end up with some really unnatural sentences and voice acting. Another reason for unnaturalness is that the actors have to match what they're saying to the mouth of the person on screen. When animation is done in the original language the voices are recorded first, and the animation follows that, which allows for more natural sounding speech.

I prefer to watch films subbed; but if I am studying the language that the film is done in, I prefer to watch it without subs to test my language ability.

Subtitled, obviously. I can read. Besides you completly forget your watching a foreign film with subtitles after about 15 minutes.

subbed, of course. i hate everything dubbed, not only japanese. we have a lot of latino soap opera here on TV, and they are all dubbed!!! it's so lame.... and the anime also, i can't bear to watch even my favourite anime on TV, why are these people bother to replace the sound anyway? isn't it easier to add some subtitles?

Generally speaking, the dubbing in live action is often of an horrendous quality. The results can vary a bit in anime, with some actually having passable dubbing. Though, I am yet to see a live action film that has dubbing that seems natural. So, for that reason, I'm going to have to go with subtitles.

It has to be subbed for films. It is easier to get away with dubbed in anime because the mouth movements aren't really affected, saying that I still watch them subbed.

When I went to see 'House of Flying Daggers' there were signs on the ticket office saying it was subbed and the ticket seller said to me 'are you aware this film is subtitled?' I told him that is how I prefer my films

True. Many customers at my work ask me if they can watch the foreign movies in English which they can with the most dvds have that option, but I like telling them that I understood with the subtitles, so they will.

subtitles everytime...except in anime.
with real movies, i think i have an ingrown fear/hatred of dubbing that comes from watching way of the dragon when i was about 12...the cheesy, 70's american dubbed soundtrack was so awful...it's hard to put into words!

with anime though, it's usually so fast paced that i'd probably miss most of the film reading the subs...and generally the voice acting on anime is a lot better than hate filled memories of ay of the dragon!!!

of my friends don't want to watch anything subbed.
I also heard that more is lost in translation with the dubbed.

obviously subbed... i remember havin my friends over to watch hero, they had no idea what was going on. 'you mean i have to read? this is a movie, not a book!' yes, but if you want to see jet li speaking with a voice over of a fat white guy, im sure i can find you the dubbed version >.<
anime dubbing is the worse... its so off, and they throw random emotion into sentences that dont call for it.
