Skating in Japan?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how popular skateboarding is in Japan. I skateboard and would like to skate in Japan. Is it looked down on? Considered a nuisance? Or maybe people think it's cool. Do a lot of Japanese skate? I guess just let me know what the skating scene is like in Nippon. Thanks.

Also - isn't rollerblading rather popular?

During my time walking the streets of Chiba, Tokyo, Yokohama, Yotsukaidou, Odawara, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, I might have seen one skateboard (in a shop window), and no rollerblades. Of course it matters where you are and when, and who you 'roll' with, but I did not notice any skaters. I have a Japanese friend who likes to skate, but as far as I know, he only skated while he was Stateside.

check Ghettocities site (he's a member here too) he skates in Japan, I heard there are people who skate, mostly in Tokyo-area I guess :?

I would like to do some distance skating *rollarblading* but I guess with all the hills, it won't be easy.. * going down would be though or in Hokaido

From what I've seen, skaters only show up at parks or in the streets after hours. I've repeatedly come across large groups skating in alleys, on structures, and just about anywhere they can find room once it gets late enough, i.e. after last train is long gone.

Skating in Japan is becoming more popular, though it's not at all like the skate scene in the States or the UK etc... Maybe the skaters in Japan are uh, more polite--- hard to say, but it's what I've read.

I've also only seen a few skaters here and there, there isn't much of a street skating scene as other places--- and the cost of the equipment is also a bit prohibitive as well.

Though I've not seen any Japanese skate mags, the mag Samurai does tend to feature a lot of skaters and typical skate clothes-----

Well they have skating comps, but yeah... I dont know where... same here in Korea, I really wanna get a skateboard to get to the subway. I dont see how it could cause too much of a problem here coz motorbikes drive on the footpath, people walk on the road etc.... but then im not in Japan.

Check that caption out heh. I keep my hand on the pulse of Japan's pop culture and none of it's growing, it's just being consumed more.
Japan is like Thanksgiving dinner, at first there is(was) a ton of food but once everyone shows(showed) up and eats(ate) it you are left only with leftovers.
