Should Japan abolish the Death Penalty?

Mohamed Atta is dead, he was the pilot of one of the planes that hit the Twin Center in 2001. But if he were still alive, I would still not approve of him being killed in the name of justice. I would opt for life imprisonment with the expenses shared between Egypt, Germany and perhaps the US too. That's just my opinion.

Yes, not only did the victim pay with his/her life, but the rest of society pays for it also.
What does the murderer end up paying for killing someone? Free room and meals for the rest of his life if he doesn't get paroled and out of jail sooner....so that they can even kill again....maybe even you.
No wonder why so many people risk the chance to go out and kill others.
But, truth is also that even for those who are sentenced to death have so many appeals that they never end up being put to death or it takes sometimes over 10 years before their death sentence is even carried out.
Many of those on death row refuse their appeal because they are sick of waiting to be put to death.

I Personally feel as being Buddhist that Life is a precious a thing. Buddhism teaches that no matter how evil the person is or how much he have done wrong in this life, he has still Buddha nature pulses at the very deep of his own life. If we view at that way, we realize that destroy someone's lives is to destroy our ownselves. I feel the same way with you that what he had done cannot be changed but there is always for him a chance for change. If japanese politics uses this Buddhist wisdom, i believe humanistic society will prevail.

The society cannot accept man who can not adjust to this human society. It is feelings as the person.

I think Japan should adopt penalty of life in prison and a graduated punishment, etc. , and reduce the capital punishment as much as possible

I believe this was the era when Buddhist beliefs system flourshed in the society and political leaders are faithfully following the Buddha's teachings on the dignity of human life. This will be a challenge for all not only to japan whether we will value life or we kill life. With these, people need a sound or solid philosophy that prevails a humanistic society by means of the "rule of Law", the Law that teaches highest dignity of all life. King Ashoka(an ardent Buddhist follower) of India, where he adopted this policies were killing or violence is prohibited in his kingdom. He treat all people bad or good as his children. He paved the way of universal peace in amity and friendship in other countries truly conquering through by the rule of Law not by force.He was the greatest ruler and king of all kings in the history of humankind as scholars of today respected him

The minister was one of the famous anti-death penalty politicians and a former representative of Amnesty Japan.

However, she kneel to public opinion (+85% supports death penalty) as she lost the election.

No, you misread me. I totally oppose capital punishment.

I have always believed that the advocates of death penalty counted on its so-called deterrent effect. Where's the deterrence however if the entire death machinery is kept out of public view? That's what I referred to as "hypocritical". Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Yeah, the death penalty as a deterrent is as effective as public executions, never really aided in preventing crime. It's still in practice today because of humanity's need for retribution, and isn't that it? Being locked up is simply not enough for the victims or families of the victims who have suffered at the hands of the criminals being executed. No, they want them dead.

I don't think that's right. Consider it, do two wrongs make a right? No, it only sates the human need for revenge.
