Should Japan abolish the Death Penalty?

Mohamed Atta is dead, he was the pilot of one of the planes that hit the Twin Center in 2001. But if he were still alive, I would still not approve of him being killed in the name of justice. I would opt for life imprisonment with the expenses shared between Egypt, Germany and perhaps the US too. That's just my opinion.

I respect you opinion.

What is the point or benefit by being humane or respectful towards a criminal who murdered someone?
What is the point of keeping such a person alive?
Wouldn't supporting the life of a murderer be just as evil as being a murderer yourself?
Ask yourself or think how others may think if you had a loved one who was murdered and some judge says, "We will keep this guy in jail and YOU get to pay the money to keep him alive!"
Yes, not only did the victim pay with his/her life, but the rest of society pays for it also.
What does the murderer end up paying for killing someone? Free room and meals for the rest of his life if he doesn't get paroled and out of jail sooner....so that they can even kill again....maybe even you.
No wonder why so many people risk the chance to go out and kill others.
But, truth is also that even for those who are sentenced to death have so many appeals that they never end up being put to death or it takes sometimes over 10 years before their death sentence is even carried out.
Many of those on death row refuse their appeal because they are sick of waiting to be put to death.

Why put the person though death and end it ASAP. And keep his butt in prison and let him suffer the guilt of what he has done and let him know that what he has done cannot be unchanged?

I Personally feel as being Buddhist that Life is a precious a thing. Buddhism teaches that no matter how evil the person is or how much he have done wrong in this life, he has still Buddha nature pulses at the very deep of his own life. If we view at that way, we realize that destroy someone's lives is to destroy our ownselves. I feel the same way with you that what he had done cannot be changed but there is always for him a chance for change. If japanese politics uses this Buddhist wisdom, i believe humanistic society will prevail.

As Gautama Buddha states:
Hatred does not ceased by hating in this world. Only love can do so.

in Japanese history from 818 to 1156, the death penalty was abolished for more than 300 years because of that

I dont consider the death penalty is a spesial punishment
If the amount of the punishment that corresponds to the crime that the person committed is a capital punishment, it is good in it.

The capital punishment is a punishment to deprive of the person's rights, "Live
It might be felt the cruel punishment that cannot be returned if it enforces it once.
The people of the human rights sect might be not able to endure this.
Man dies without fail.
so do you.
The amount of the punishment in Japan is a penalty or a punishment to deprive of their time.
Penalty of life in prison deprives of the time of the person as long as it is alive.
the human rights group consents of the life sentence because cruelty is reduced
However, depriving of time is the same.
However, it is not possible to deprive the person of the thought as long as it is alive
It is freedom in the head as usual. This might be a difference between the capital punishment and penalty of life in prison.

Why is there to begin with a penalty?
it corrects man whom committed the crime
I dont think so ...
I think it isolates man who committed the crime from the society with the penalty.
The society cannot accept man who can not adjust to this human society. It is feelings as the person.
The person of the opposition tries to think about this feelings and to think about things logically by ridiculing it when it is barbarous. However, feelings are "Nature" that man originally has.

The discussion of far apart from feelings is steady with making of the computer the law.
I think Japan should adopt penalty of life in prison and a graduated punishment, etc. , and reduce the capital punishment as much as possible
My feelings cannot be permitted to abolition as long as the crime thought that the people of the large majority of the Japanese consider to apply the death penalty emotionally exists in this world.

Many of opponent of death punishments might be misunderstanding the criminal punishment with science.

anyway in Japan, he criminal who receives the death sentence in the murder is 0.1%.
The capital punishment system of Japan doesn't function from the point of consolation of the victim.
It can have the expectation of the consolation to the crime for the victim and the person in a general society only in the place where choices of capital punishment even remain.

I believe this was the era when Buddhist beliefs system flourshed in the society and political leaders are faithfully following the Buddha's teachings on the dignity of human life. But today, mainstream Japanese politics follows its secular laws without religious sense or the conscience of spiritual life.

This will be a challenge for all not only to japan whether we will value life or we kill life. With these, people need a sound or solid philosophy that prevails a humanistic society by means of the "rule of Law", the Law that teaches highest dignity of all life. King Ashoka(an ardent Buddhist follower) of India, where he adopted this policies were killing or violence is prohibited in his kingdom. He treat all people bad or good as his children. He paved the way of universal peace in amity and friendship in other countries truly conquering through by the rule of Law not by force. He was the greatest ruler and king of all kings in the history of humankind as scholars of today respected him

Japan has hanged two death row inmates, in the first executions since the new government took power last year
Japan hangs two death row inmates

Justice Minister Keiko Chiba (lost the latest Upper House election) executed 2 men today.
The minister was one of the famous anti-death penalty politicians and a former representative of Amnesty Japan.

However, she kneel to public opinion (+85% supports death penalty) as she lost the election.

Just thought this was worth posting in the context of this thread: local media (not members of the foreign press, of course) were for the first time granted access to an execution chamber in Tokyo.

I do hope that Mrs Chiba succeeds in stirring a public debate on capital punishment in Japan. The current practices - shrouded in secrecy - are nothing but hypocritical.

If i read this right, You're telling us that you believe that the death punishment is justified for a "eye for an eye"?

No, you misread me. I totally oppose capital punishment.

I have always believed that the advocates of death penalty counted on its so-called deterrent effect. Where's the deterrence however if the entire death machinery is kept out of public view? That's what I referred to as "hypocritical". Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Yeah, the death penalty as a deterrent is as effective as public executions, never really aided in preventing crime. It's still in practice today because of humanity's need for retribution, and isn't that it? Being locked up is simply not enough for the victims or families of the victims who have suffered at the hands of the criminals being executed. No, they want them dead.

I don't think that's right. Consider it, do two wrongs make a right? No, it only sates the human need for revenge.
