as in some other threads, there has been talking about remakes of the Ringu, old boy, ju-on. as this movies there are lot of other movies in the world that has been remaking... vanila sky was a spanish movie! etc etc

so wich movie do you think was BAD BAD BAD to make a remake, and wish they didnt do, and WHY?

and is there a movie you think that the remake is better then the Original one?

The remake of 'Nikita' called 'The Assassin'. An excellent French film made into a dire American one.

I can think of several remakes that I didn't like ..... and several that I preferred!

As usual - many of these are (like me ...) older movies - but bear with me....!

i) "Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven" - IMHO ... both were classics !

ii)"High Noon/Outlander" - Almost as good as the first choice, but the original definitely had "the edge" !

iii) There have been many versions of "Tale of Two Cities" - but one remake ... and it was a remake- even in the 'fifties ! - was the best of all....the version with Dirk Bogarde from 195(3?). Wonderful piece of work !

iv) "Cape Fear" - should never have been remade ! The original, with Robert Mitchum was superb ! Not graphical at all - but full of suspense ! I have both on tape/DVD.

v) There have been more versions of "Christmas Carol" than I've had hot dinners - but there will never be a substitute for the Alistair Sim version !

(....but Bill Murray's "Scrooge" was unique; I admit - I did enjoy it !)

vi) "Ocean's Eleven" ? I like the work of (...dear,sweet, lovely ...)Julia Roberts et al - but ..... Nah....! Lacked charisma.

vii) "The Italian Job" - I saw the original - give me a break !

... and that's about it - for the moment (! ... I could be back !)

It all comes down to film-making ! Some directors have it - some don't ! Some directors get a good script .... some don't !

P.S.

... I forgot to mention "Titanic" ! And this possibly doesn't qualify as a 'remake' ...

...but...

....it didn't hold a candle to "A Night to Remember" !

(Just to please my friends on the "Titanic" forum I used to frequent ... !)

Planet of the Apes.

I so loved the first one and was really looking forward to the remake. In the end, watching it just hurt. And it had so much potential......

Dune, the cable series.

Actually wasn't half bad, but some cheesy effects and bad acting spoiled the whole thing.

Who did the original 'Old Boy'? I have only seen the Korean version and I loved it... never realised that it had been done before... or has been done since.
Im looking forward to the remake of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' I think Johnny Depp would make a much better Willy Wonka!!!! Never particularly enjoyed the first one, coz it completely changed my whole perception from when I read the book. But if it has Johnny Depp in it, not too much can go wrong :)

There aren't really any decent remakes...well, in the last ten years anyway!
I think eastern cinema remakes are the worst because they susally handle topics that don't always translate!
I'll never understand why they remake eastern films like ringu etc etc, but they will never touch such films as Amelie (fantastic in it's own right, and imho shouldn't be remade!).
The remake of Taxi (another French film) looks abismal, but the orginal was really cool!

i found the remake of Ringu so dull i was driven to do my physics homework.....

i found the second one better purly because it wasn't a remake and took the story on by it's self.... it was still crap... but better than the first one.

Now they are bringing back old movies and remaking them like "Herbie" and whatnot. I am so mad! Just leave the old movies alone damn it!

I agree on both counts...except i didn't have any physics to do.

lol... ah.... i don't know whether that makes you lucky or not ^.^

i do have to say tho.... i don't think the grudge remake was all that bad... sarah michell geller anoyed the pants off me... and i'm a die hard buffy fan.... but i think it was done pretty well... managed to scare me a bit at least ^^; and the sence with yoko... that was niice :p

"Remakes you're not happy with?"

-All of them. Remakes are stealing and profiting from others work. Much worse than piracy (which isn't wrong in anyway) And then all remakes are crap.

well.... not necesarily....
they're like cover versions of songs.... it's just if someone thinks they can take the idea and develop it...
i agre... they perhaps don't show as much crativity and a completely new film.... but... what about adaptations of plays into films? throretivcally, they're remakes.... i mena, you get themcompletely different, but a lot of remakes are completely different

sorry... i know what i'm trying to say, it just isn't coming out....

Yeah, the Korean version of Old Boy is awesome, but they are going to make an American (Hollywood) version of it.
