Hey everyone I started to put together a beginers guide to speaking REAL JAPANESE! It will basically give you the real life sentence usage with the equvilant in Japanese.

This way you don't sound like the Queen of England the next time you go vist your buddies at the local pub.

Text book Example: (Greeting at the Summer Rock Festival)
Good Evening, My name is Jack. How are you?

Real Japanese Example:
Hey, What's up? I'm Jack.

I'd advise Japanese language newcomers that learning Japanese slang never works out in any practical way... Your more likely to simply confuse at best, or insult at worst, than be understood.

You can learn colloquial Japanese through manga, and through speaking with native Japanese... If you are at a point where you are at "the local pub" with Japanese speakers, you can pick up their lingo naturally, by example, rather than taking the advice of some random person on the internet.

Besides, unless you are talking to your significant other, there's absolutely nothing wrong with sounding too polite... You won't earn cool points by rattling off some obscure slang that most Japanese don't use, and ending all your sentences with plain form verbs.

I hope the creators of Making out in Japanese gave you permission to copy their material.

Hmmm... I was going to mention that book as an example of a book to avoid, now I can just advise avoiding both in their entirety.

I've managed to avoid Making Out in Japanese, so I can't comment on whether or not (or to what extent) the material on this guy's page is plagiarized from there.

I can say, though, that it only took about a minute of scanning it over to find a bunch of really fundamental mistakes.

How's it going? --"Dou genki?"
Huh? Is this supposed to be "(Saikin) dou? Genki?" or something like that? As one phrase, "Dou genki?" sounds like nonsense.

What have you been doing? --"Nani yattena no?"
Obviously supposed to be "Nani yatteta no?"

Okay, I guess --"Anmari"
Eh? Maybe in a _very_ specific context?

Listen --"Kitte"
"kiite"

Those are just a few of the more egregious errors. Also, a lot of the "masculine"/"feminine" speech markers (colors) are way off. For example, it says that "Genki yo" should only be used by males and "Genki da yo" should only be used by females. If anything, it should be the other way around (leaving alone the silliness of saying "should only")

It's also kind of strange how it has the "blunt" versions of some expressions "butsu butsu iu na yo", but not for others -- there's only "kiite", it doesn't give "(hito no hanashi o) kike yo" or anything similar.

Anyway, books and sites like these just show the futility of trying to master Japanese "slang" (which in this case is really just casual speech) without understanding the basics of the language.

Besides, what's the point? Even if a beginning student could hypothetically master all of these little interjections and filler phrases, s/he still couldn't actually talk about anything meaningful.

I think the double entendre of the book is supposed to suggest that you'll be able to pick up women better with your arsenal of out-dated colloquialisms which you will mangle nonetheless...

It's probably more affable to sound too polite, something the Japanese use themselves for comedic effect, start by introducting yourself _______________ de gozaimasu, yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

I do recommend these books concerning natural sounding Japanese...

Japanese the manga way. (written by Mangajin's old translations editior)
Mangajin magazine. (now out of print) In my opinion the best, and most engaging magazine on learning colloquial Japanese through manga.

Manga may seem like a puerile means of learning Japanese, but trust me, it's a tried and true means (in addition of course to a standard course work) of learning natural sounding spoken Japanese.

So far I've only checked out the Introductions page and jt_san beat me to
the most serious grammatical offenses. Just one other would be "Dou shita na?" for "What's wrong ?" which doesn't make sense at all AFAIK. There are other issues with translation and context but this seems more than enough to worry about for now.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I had a friend ask me to do the content for this page. I didn't put 2 and 2 together. You guys are right it does match Making out...

Anyway I have removed the content and will revise it myself, When I get some time.
