Another video from Yuka-san. Here is an abandoned elementary school that has been turned into a hotel. She even sweeps the floor at 24:26! (a common thing to do for Japanese elementary students, unheard of and unimaginable for American elementary students).

I know exactly how hard learning kanji can be. So when I find anything that helps anyone learn a few more kanji, I am more than happy to post it. Here is a video on ways to help remember 巡 (jun; travel around).

Did you know the Nintendo Company started out in 1889 (!) as a company selling playing cards? (And did you know that western-style playing cards were illegal in Japan until the beginning of the twentieth century?) Also, I had no idea that Nintendo has sold millions and millions of game consoles over the years.

Here is a little more history of Tokyo. Did you know that the land that Tokyo Station sits on was once underwater, was part of Tokyo Bay?

The coastline used to come right up to Tokyo Castle. And Hibiya Park used to be Hibiya Bay, before it was filled in with landfill:
"I had no idea that the bay came as far in as the Emperor's Palace Grounds until 1880. But then, when you look at a map it makes sense seeing as the bottom-right side of the moat has straight, manmade lines. Thanks for sharing!

What was the mouth of a river entering the bay in front of the Shogun castle near where is now Hibiya park was filled very early during the Shogunate (early 1600s). It was called Hibiya Irie, the Hibiya bay. One had to cross that bay to go from the castle to a large sand bank, where Tokyo station stands nowadays (that area was called Edomaeshima). The river was redirected to avoid floodings of the castle area, and to do that a big piece of land was dug, it is the "valley" near Ochanomizu (which is not natural). The material thus dug was used to fill Hibiya Bay.

Tokyo continues to expand its area by reclaiming land from Tokyo Bay, but it no longer adds land directly to the shoreline. Instead, it builds artificial islands in Tokyo Bay, which are completely surrounded by water. Perhaps the best-known of these is Odaiba Island.

When I was in Japan, Odaiba Island did not exist (which gives you an idea of just how long it's been lived I lived in Japan). When I was there, they were building Yume no Shima -- Dream Island, which today is a location of a large botanical garden.

Until several years ago, Haneda Airport had three runways. But Haneda Airport now has a fourth runway, built on land reclaimed from Tokyo Bay. This is a video of an airliner landing on one of the original runways, and you can see the new runway out the window, perpendicular to the runway being used for landing. Look closely, and you can see how this is an artificial island, connected to Haneda Airport by only a taxiway.

There is a ferry that can take you from one side of Tokyo Bay to the other. During the oppressively hot Tokyo summer, it is cool on that ferry! The ferry takes cars, trucks, motorcycles, and bicycles. (But vehicle spaces are limited. If you fail to get a parking space on the last trip back to Tokyo, you have to drive all the way around Tokyo Bay via Chiba to get home!)

Another Haru-san video. ZipAir has launched four special non-stop flights this year to Orlando Florida for people wanting to go to Disney World. This is the first-ever non-stop Japan-to-Florida service. (And I want to point out how "direct" does not mean the same thing as "non-stop." One time I flew from Minneapolis Minnesota to Hawaii on a direct flight, which means it was all on the same airplane, I kept the same seat, and my checked bags were not transferred from one airplane to another. I also sat inside the airplane all the way from Minneapolis to Hawaii (so I was not required to de-plane and then re-board). But the airplane made a stop at Seattle, showing how it was direct service but not non-stop service.) The ZipAir flights will be non-stop.
