We would like to think that Japan is making progress in areas such as women's rights and the elimination of things such as the exploitation of women in the アイドル industry. But there is a strong, extreme right-wing political movement in Japan that is actually trying to eliminate women's rights in Japan, an organization called the Nihon Kaigi (日本会議) (にほん かいぎ) ("Japan Conference"). From 35:34 we hear that the Nihon Kaigi says, "…comfort women [should] shut up, we will oppose the rights for children and the rights of women, there is no way to allow separate family names for married couples, and women should shut up, and we will definitely crush any initiatives for gender equality." From 10:20 we hear that 80% of Shinzo Abe's cabinet officials were "members" of Nihon Kaigi.

 
Here is the 1936 movie Osaka Elegy. Check out the bunraku (文楽) (ぶんらく) (Japanese puppet theatre) from 29:10. Of particular interest to me is how most people in the movie (men as well as women) wear kimono rather than western clothing — this has really changed in modern-day Japan.

American actor Tommy Lee Jones made some surprising TV commercials. (Coffee sold in pop-top aluminum cans is very popular in Japan.) His name in the video is Alien From Outer Spaces Jones (Uchuujin Jones) (うちゅうじん ジョーンズ) (宇宙人ジョーンズ) because he portrays an alien who has come to Earth to observe strange human behavior on Earth.

Here is a fascinating video about a fully bilingual Caucasian young lady who was born and raised in Japan and went to elementary, middle, and high school in Japan. (Her family, while in Japan, even had to make a point of speaking English at home so she would learn to speak English.) One thing the video points out is how being born in Japan does NOT automatically give a person Japanese citizenship.

Here is something quite different. This is a video of a young American girl who remembers being a Japanese person in Japan in a past-life. She remembers the atomic bomb being dropped and how she helped nurse people who had been injured by the atomic bomb blast.

Reading the news of young women falling prey to host clubs, I found the British documentary The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief (2006) by Jake Clennell, describing a host club in Osaka. The male hosts and their female customers are interviewed, and through the interviews, we learn about the nature of host clubs and why the customers are coming there.
