Any Portland natives on this board?

I'm From Portland , But......

Portland, Maine. Our Maine airport is small & friendly, but over 1000 miles to the east. I think all airport security now is suspicious & a little paranoid about everyone; even the caucasion in a suit & tie gets checked.

Frank

😊

This is the first I've heard of the Portland airport being anti-Asian. I would think Portland, OR would be the opposite?

What's the story? I'm from the east coast, so I don't know what's going on.

I don't know either.
I'm from the west coast, but if I go to a small town in the hills, they look at me like a monkey in a zoo.
Aaa......I let slide.
What am I gonn'a do? Pick a fight?
I'm out-numbered!

Ok, I guess I do know something after all....shock horror! :o
The INS dept of Portland, Ore had been forcibly removed a couple of years ago due to the De-Portland status the Immigration section of the Portland airport had up to that point....and, having personally been affected by the bloody idiots there, I can say with some expertise that I'm glad the leader of their INS club got canned (even though officially he resigned).
The whole incident became internationally known after a Chinese woman was held by the local INS personnel at the airport, strip searched by (a female) officer and held in confinement for several hours (could have been the entire weekend, I don't recall), then, without given the chance to even tell her co-workers or people at the destination she was headed to anything, she was promptly deported (thus giving the airport the DePortland nickname). This caused Delta airlines to cancel all direct flights to Japan as a result, and business has taken a nosedive in the region around the mushroom forest (aka silicon forest).
Now that that unpleasant situation has been buried in the past, Portland is still struggling to get back on track again, but from where I sit, it is still the backwater Tattoine of the galaxy, far far away from all the action, and the economy still sux! :D

I'm not getting anybody down, am I? I ought not like to think I'm getting anybody down..... LOL

so there you have it.....Portland is now open for your cash dollars and they can use all the help they can get in getting their backwards thinking city officials to start attracting tourists and business types again :D

any questions? There will be a test at the end of the week to see if any of this has sunk in :D

Lexico will oversee the testing...

I'm from Seattle (near Portland) and I'm sure this was just a rare instance. For the most part, I'd say Portland is a very diverse and open-minded city. Don't let one bad situation or a few rotten apples sway your opinion about the whole city.

Brooker is right though....things are slowly improving at the city.....maybe with the new Mayor things may change for the better even faster..... :o
Still, the stigma of the INS is on the minds of many people, I'm sure.... :(

I'm with Brooker. Maybe it was an isolated incident. When I think of Portland, OR, I think of a very open-minded city. Especially compared to places around here!

The INS has got its share of problems, though. No doubt about it.

Anyone who had papers that were "a little bit off" would be deported. Nothing surprising about that. What does that have to do with racism or profiling?

no, they weren't racists...they were just profiling, like the Portland Police is known to do with the African Americans here...has nothing to do with racism...
at least until several people get shot up and the media gets ahold of it....then it a circus...

I am from Portland, one of the best cities in the US! We do have direct flights to Asia now.

potential for being one of the best cities....
if the employment goes up, and the Multnomah County Taxes go away... :D
