When I was 16, I thought that no woman would ever want me, that I was the ugliest guy in town, that I was weird and uncool and just incredibly lame. All my friends were getting action of all kinds and I wasn't.
About a month before I was moving from town, my friend and his brother took me to a college dance. Most of the people there looked exactly like high school kids, so I didn't think about being uncomfortable.
In fact, I totally wasn't thinking when I walked up to this rather fine-looking young woman that was talking to my friend and asked her to dance with me. It was a group thing, nothing special, and we just sort of stood in place and swayed to the music.
Another song came on, my friend joined the group (some kind of square dancing to a techno "Cotton-Eyed Joe") and I spotted that same woman sitting down with her friends. I held out my hand and asked her to dance. She accepted. Wasn't all that great, I kept bumping into other people, but she had a good time.
I excused myself and went to the bathroom. 15 minutes later, a slow song was playing and I went to find her. The second I was right behind her and asked her to dance, my friend came up and asked her first.
I was in shock. Couldn't believe my bro would play me. I could see her hesitate, and I got very flustered, and I just left. Walked outside. I didn't get to dance with her the way I wanted to for the rest of the night, and all I got was a passing "bye, Forest" before she went with her group to the parking lot.
I was told later that she had left my friend 30 seconds after I had left the room, looking for me. She couldn't find me and went back to him.
Trying to do right be me, my friend talked to her at a party the next day. Tried lying to her, saying I was in college, but the truth came out. She made this comment about how I looked way older than I was, can't remember it all. She was 22.
Looking back on it, it's doubtful I would have had a functional relationship with her. She was going to college, she was my friend's cousin (which I DEEPLY resented for a while, like what the hell) I was moving, less than a snowball's chance in a firepit that anything could have happened.
Yes it would have. Can't delude myself either. She was into me and I was into her and I couldn't stop thinking about her for three months. People who say that a dance is a form of lovemaking, they're absolutely right. I wish that I had been able to step up and say something, that I could have felt her body against mine, that I could have cradled her head into my shoulder.
What's my point. Um, cheers to all the "older women" in the lives of men. Without you, there'd be no poetry, no dreams, and certainly no experiences.
