Very true! I live in the south of the US also known as the "Bible Belt" and it's definitely hard to be yourself here. You have one group telling you that it's fine to be who you are and the next group saying if you're not how we say you should be than you're bad and evil etc. It's definietly hard on a person sometimes. Even if you have different political beliefs that can be hard. It must be so nice not to have religious zealots shoving things in your face all the time like here and be able to just be yourself and have people not make you feel horrible. I think that if other country's weren't so sexually repressed and people were allowed to be who they were we wouldn't have so many of those problems like we do for example in the U.S. This past year here in the States it seems there were so many stories of sexually repressed priests (not just Catholic) going after children and going to "services" and things like that and hiding who they were like Ted Haggard and him hiding himself being gay because he believed the Bible condems it. On your number two I would also add that people are afraid that their neighbors would find out about their fetishes and it could "ruin" their reputation and all that. One thing I've noticed though is Japan still has religion and their spiritualness about them but it seems they don't try to force it on other people like here in the States within our government and just plain peer pressure.

Japan is a place where people (sometimes quitely, privately) aren't afraid to explore certain things. More commonly, things like fashion, music, etc. are openly experimented with and in Tokyo this is apparent, style and entertainment there are among the most varied and eclectic in the world. And there isn't a huge religion-ized section of the populous holding everyone else back either like the neo-conservative Christian element in the US. Therefore you'll have people looking into a whole range of interesting fetishes such as young girls, women/animal hybrids, everything under the sun basically. I could be wrong here but to my general knowledge, Japan does not have a significantly higher rate of sexual assualts on children than other industrialized countries, that is to say, Japan is not 'known' for being a pedo-heaven and having an international problem.
So this tells me two things, 1) The Japanese appear to be able to enjoy their fetishes responsibly, for the most part, and 2) They're less inhibited privately than we are in the west, where even behind closed doors some people would never explore things even if they wanted to due to heavy religious overtones and feelings of guilt.

The outfit in the first video is an icon of the adult industry and both are overly revealing (which is another key trait), the dance is suggestive - many of the moves they make have sexual connotations, and I have no doubt they know what it means.

There's just something about those clips that makes me feel uncomfortable when I'm watching them. To be brutally honest, sure female youth will always appeal to men but I think thats the case only up to a certain point. Highschool girls for example are far more sexually aware, have more adult looking bodies, they're just 'young' because of their numerical age. That's not to say its correct or lawful for full grown men to chase them, but its not completely unnatural either.

These dancing lil girls however, I feel like someone's making these girls do it. Not forcing them but somehow, as someone said, they are doing things which they do not fully understand the connotations of. When they move their bodies that way its a little disturbing because kids that age do not possess the knowledge, hormones, experience, or proper self-motivation to want to display themselves sexually. By contrast a highschool-age girl might feel like showing off a bit, trying to catch some boys downtown, 'exploring' etc. but this feels different. These girls aren't normally capable of this behaviour on their own so its not quite right. Just my 2 cents though.

IIRC, the PTA's problem with the magazines pipokun listed were their amount of sexual content. Since Sho-Comi (Shoujo Comic) has a lot of stories with sexual content (not hentai-level, but a bit explicit), and Bessatsu Friend also has some stories that deal with mature subjects (for instance, the manga Life, about a depressed teenage girl who cuts herself), doinkies can see why the PTA might object to those. However, Ciao and Nakayoshi I don't really understand. Nakayoshi has some stories with some suggestive scenes, but they're nowhere near Sho-Comi level (because the target audience of Nakayoshi is younger than the audiences of Sho-Comi and Betsufure, which are aimed at high school girls). Ciao, however, I don't see why the PTA would most object to. A lot of the manga in there seems very innocent in nature, perhaps there are some suggestive scenes, but again it's not near the level of Sho-Comi. (And Ciao's target audience is the same as Nakayoshi's.)

About the videos that caster linked to, they are from a particular episode of Utawara Hot Hit 10, which is no longer airing. I read on the Japanese Wikipedia article that after the episode aired, the TV station that aired the show got tons of complaints from viewers who felt the episode was in bad taste, and the issue was also raised at a later meeting of the BPO where members also criticized that episode. The other thing I just thought of after reading the excerpt from Wikipedia in doinkies post is that these children do not know the meaning of what they are doing, and IMO this is dangerous. I strongly feel that many Japanese women allow themselves to be viewed and used as sexual objects by men, have a low view of themselves and their bodies. This goes on in the West, too. Only, here parents generally ignore it/pretend it isn't there. Which is hilarious. I remember my Dad when I was 12 or 13 saying, "I wish the girls dressed/acted like that when I was your age."

Well, they are just as bad today as they were 15 or 16 years ago. They dress, dance, look, and act just as suggestive now at 12 as they did when I was that age.

The wierd thing is, as an adult, I don't see them as sexual beings. So when I see them behave in that manner, it shocks me. It takes me a moment to remember how they were when I was 12.
