New to Japan

Hi,
My name is Sally. I've just moved to Tokyo with my husband and three kids. I stayed here one summer years ago as a student, and am very happy to be back here to live. We are from Northern California and miss the weather at home, but that's about all we miss (other than people). We love Japan and the lifestyle in Tokyo!
One reason I joined this forum is to get advice on the best places to hike, best restaurants, best parks, etc. I've read the guidebooks, but they don't compare to real opinions from real people.
I am also hoping to track down some Japanese friends we have lost contact with.

We actually went out to Mount Takao yesterday. We thought we were going on a weekday when it would be less crowded, but of course, we picked a national holiday. So we and a million other people (including an Elvis impersonator) hiked to the summit. It was pretty, but I am hoping to get farther away from Tokyo to find some hiking where we encounter only a few thousand people, instead of a few million, on the trails.

If you have any other hiking suggestions, I would love to know them. Thanks so much!

I went to Nikko the other day, and saw several hiking courses as we approached our destination. It's also a place of great historic importance, and beautiful to say the least. Getting there might be a bit of a hassle, though.

I recommend checking out www.outdoorjapan.com since they have a plethora of resources including a page dedicated to day-hikes around Tokyo.
