やった is past tense of やる (here: to give).

えさをやる lit. "to give food", "to feed (an animal)".

That's what I'm doing right now. I have two hungry dogs waiting. 🐶🐶

Do you use that verb in that context? It seems our pets always seem to be on a more equal footing with us and we never use やる

I use German on our dogs, but my wife does indeed say "御飯をあげる" which seems to be more common with pets. :)
