Hi, I'm a beginning Japanese learner. I have attempted to learn the language a few times before but had a tendency to lose motivation. I decided that if I was focusing on translating games that I find fun I might be able to keep my motivation up longer this time. Things were going ok until I got to this sentence.
龍の宝玉を光らせたということが龍神の神子として龍神様に選ばれた証
I'll try my best to explain how far I was able to get.
龍の宝玉を光らせたということが龍神の神子として龍神様に選ばれた証
I'll try my best to explain how far I was able to get.
龍の宝玉 = game term = dragon's jewels (plural in English I'm assuming because there are 8 of them in the game)
光らせた = past-tense potential form of 光らす
という = grammatical structure based on quoting grammar the と is the quote particle. This can be used in any case where something is describing something else or something like that.
こと = abstract thing or event used in lots of grammatical structures as well.
として = another grammatical construct based on quoting grammar. と is the quote particle and して is the て-form of する it roughly translates as "Do like" but more elegantly is translated as "as"
龍神様 = game term = dragon god
選ばれた = past tense passive form of 選ぶ
証 = あかし = proof.
Put this all together and my best bet was something like: "The fact that the dragon's jewels [blank] is proof that you were chosen by the dragon god as the dragon priestess."
The problem is that pesky [blank] in there. I initially read the verb as the potential form but every grammar guide I have found online states that the potential form can't take direct objects and dragon's jewels has the direct object particle so I wasn't sure how those two words went together or if I was reading the verb wrong altogether. Searching Jisho.org and cross referencing with WWWJDIC I found the verb 目を光らせる which means to keep a watchful eye. This definition appears to be idiomatic but it does show the 光らせる verb with an indirect object.
After spending a good 3ish hours on this sentence, I felt like I hit a bit of an impasse and cried a little. This sentence doesn't even look like it should really be that hard either :/
I know it is somewhat selfish of me to plead for help but here I am pleading for help. I don't want to give up on my project even if this sentence is really above the grammar level I am at now. I'm having a ton of fun trying to make my way through the game text. If any of you have time to help me with this I really appreciate it. If it was inappropriate for me to ask this on these forums at this time, please let me know. I'm sorry for any inconveniences I have caused. Thank you for the help.

ということ = from what I could find when the two are together you can translated it as something like "so that means" I found it most elegant to translate it as "the fact that" in the context of the sentence but this is likely wrong or a bit too much artistic license as my understand of this grammatical construct is shaky at best.
