Hi folks,
I'm working on a personal translation (Japanese to English) of a 16th century text called 大臣 (the minister).
This is one of several adaptations of the well-known folktale called "Yuriwaka Daijin" or the Minister Yuriwaka.
The text I'm working on is part of a 1946 edited anthology of texts from the Muromachi era dance tradition known as kowakamai.
The Yuriwaka story garnered some interest in the Meiji era due to Tsubouchi Shoyo's claim that its source was quite likely Homer's Odyssey.
Anyway, part of the difficulty in working on a text of this era is a) the obscure historical references, b) the use of 文語 or literary/classical Japanese and c) the use of obsolete kanji.
I am one page in and already feeling the heat! I am not fluent in Japanese by any stretch.
I am working on this as a means of studying/learning Japanese.
In other words, I'm way out of my depth. But that's where I like to be when it comes to learning.
So, I was wondering if any of you kind souls might be able to help identify the first two kani in the attached sentence below.
For the second kanji, I was leaning towards ji as in the word tsugi 次 but I'm not sure.
