ように can mean "so that/in order to" only when attached to a verb. "Noun のような/ように/ようだ always means "like".

Are you reading it あしして2で割る or たして2で割る?
If the former, try the latter instead and it will make perfect sense.

Sorry, I think I worded my question weird.
I understand たして2で割る (combining 2 things to make one thing).
The phrase I'm having trouble with is this: 足して半分に割ればちょうどいいのに
Is that like ying and yang or like two halves combining to form a better whole?

What is the context?
You understand the meaning of the set phrase 足して2で割る correctly, but missed 2で割る. "Combining 2 things to make one thing" is just 足す.
足して2で割る and 足して半分に割る are the same.

No, you don't understand, because that's not what means at all. You have to completely ignore or misunderstand 2で割る to get at that meaning.
"Add (two) things together and divide by two"
"Add (two) things together and divide it in half"
That's just two ways of saying the exact same thing. It is saying to take the average between a couple of things. Neither of the things are appropriate, but something right in between...the average of the two...would be just right.
You may have been overthinking this and inventing complexity where there was none.
