Need a word or phrase translated?

No clue I saw it on the front cover of a random magazine, just with those words.
There must be a context that is obvious for the readers. For instance, it might refer to an article / a comic/ a novel that is on the magazine, or the cover picture might be a hint.

How do you say "depending on"... in Japanese. For example, "Depending on your grade this semester, this will determine which class you will be placed into next semester", I want to know the most common way to say it. Could it be 次の学期のプレスメントはこの学期の成績いかんだ。
The particle で can also work in the example sentence.

来学期どのクラスに入るかは、今学期の成績で決まります。
今学期の成績で、来学期どのクラスに入るかが決まります。

~によって is more common, though.

There are these two sentences I'm not too sure about

1. A friend congratulates his friend after he ties with someone in a kendo match.
「やるな」
双方とも、という意味で、武雄はそれを察してかぶりを振った。

Does 双方とも、という意味で, mean that the comment could be directed towards both parties(Takeo and the person he fought with)
or does it mean Takeo felt the other party was more deserving of the praise?
Takeo interpreted that the comment やるな was directed towards both parties, but he felt the other party was more deserving of the praise, so he shook his head (to deny the comment).

2. 上機嫌となると、すぐに他人をも持ち上げにかかるとうがそっくりだ。
Does the highlighted portion mean "placed at the same level as someone else"?
持ち上げる means "to praise" here.

BTW, there must be a typo in とうがそっくりだ.

naho = that person , right? Based on the context I think thats appropriate
Yes, as I wrote そのときになほに取ってほしい行動 in my previous post.

"What is written on it (= そこに書いてあるの)" is the subject of the sentence, and 出来事と行動 is the predicative.

Oops, you're right. It should have been ところがそっくりだ.

Thanks as usual, Tori :p

Sorry for the late response! I'm the one who asked for a translation of some lyrics and then just sorta forgot about it. I'll just give you the full lyrics of one song at a time. I really only need a summary of what happens in the songs and not full a line for line translation, only the lines I'm having problems with. I wouldn't mind if someone gave me a line for line translation either. I could check back with what I've translated myself.

So this is the first song:

The bold lines are those I can't figure out, where I would need a full translation.

Toritoribe, in case that reply was directed at me, I can only thank you for giving me that hint and confirming my assumption about what the lyrics meant. That doesn't help me completely understand those lines I mentioned though. I still don't understand what's with the casket and how it fits into the sentence. I really need someone to explain that to me.

In the part of the sentence Yzlot provided is the kakaru there
他人をも持ち上げにかかる

Does that mean "To begin to praise others/strangers" like the phrase I put before 攻略にかかる

I guess I will use letianchen's example to clear something up

他人をも持ち上げにかかる = That means the ones receiving praise are the 他人?
if we put 他人が that means " the strangers praise others"? rather than the subject praising the strangers?

So it's supposed to be French? Well then it makes sense. I just assumed it's supposed to be English. I've never heard the word "casquette" before and I didn't think about googling "キャスケット" itself. I tried three or four different dictionaries and they all gave me "casket" as a translation. Thanks for the help!

What about the other two lines I asked about? Especially "星さえも摩天楼を科学者気どりで着飾る" just won't make any sense to me. I know the words in the line, I just can't put them together into a sentence that makes sense. I only get weird gibberish for the second half.

These are some more lines of the song:

時は密かにテクノポリスをただ走り去った
忘れかけてた夢に気づいた まだときめく
いつか見た青い空は 行き先さえも告げずに

くずれかけてた胸の破片も ああ掃き散らして
街はわずかに錆びることもなく ただきらめく
星さえも摩天楼を科学者気どりで着飾る

Aside from that last line, I've got a vague understanding of the first three lines, while the others are pretty clear to me.

That's right.

Yes, that's the function of を.

Others begin to praise (someone). The object is not stated.

How about your initial question and our replies to it? What is your translation of そこに書いてあるのは、これからなほに起こる出来事と、そのときに取ってほしい行動 after hearing our answers?

All I can say is that if it's 星さえも摩天楼/科学者気どりで着飾る or 星さえも摩天楼を科学者気どりで飾る, it makes sense to me.

What's written on it, from here on the incidents that occur with naho, at that time I wan't naho to carry them out.

Sounds kind of bad, but I think I have the right idea.

Thanks for the response Toritoribe.

What is written on it IS an event that will happen on Nao from now and an action I hope / the writer hopes her to take at that time.
(I.e., what will happen on Nao and an action she should take at that time are written on it.)

Thank you Toritoribe,

Do you mean what will happen to naho? I don't know what you mean by on naho that doesn't make any sense to me. I think I get your translation but it is a bit confusing. Its basically saying, when the event written occurs, (the writer) wants naho to carry out the procedure necessary, right?

This is a bit random, but I'm a bit curious. I came across "ばっか" and wondered if 破家 is ever stretched out as "ばっか"?

Or is ばっか just a colloquial version of ばっかり?

Yes, roughly, that's what it means. It doesn't have to necessarily be a procedure, but just a course of action, as Toritoribe mentioned.

Oh, sorry, my bad. Yeah, I meant an event that will happen to Naho.

I'm talking about the sentence structure. It says that the two things are written on it as a result, but this interpretation is from the structure as a noun sentence: そこに書いてあるのは(= the subject)、これからなほに起こる出来事(= one predicative)と 、そのときに取ってほしい行動(= another predicative)だ/です(The copula at the end of the sentence is omitted.).

I've never seen 破家. As for ばっか, yes, it's a colloquial form of ば(っ)かり.

EDICT suggests that 破家 has the same meaning as 馬鹿 although it doesn't group them under the same entry. I suppose it's rare ateji.
I've never seen 馬鹿 read as ばっか though, if it's stretched it seems to become ばあか or ばぁか or the like.

Oh yes, wiki also says that 日本国語大辞典 has that ateji for ばか.

Baka (word)

ばか is rarely changed to ばっか as a stand-alone word, but ばっか is used as ばか in some forms such like ばっかじゃないの.

That definitely would make a bit more sense, but I listened to the song again and the lyrics I gave are definitely what's being sung. Even without seeing the lyrics, what I hear is "Hoshi sae mo matenrō o kagaku-sha kidori de kikazaru" and that's exactly what the lyrics say. Whatever translation I come up with sounds nonsensical, even if it's correct grammar-wise.

yamada shinjattandayo ( no japanese keyboard :( sorry)

Is this a negative of "to die" or is it saying the guy died.

the ja part is messing me up. is it "Yamada died" or " Yamada didn't die", im 90% sure its the first, I just don't think ive seen ja in a verb before like that.

死んじゃった is the contraction of 死んでしまった. Haven't you seen ~ちゃった, as in 食べ過ぎちゃった or 財布忘れちゃった, which is the contraction of ~てしまった? ~じゃった is the voiced version of it. ~てしまった/~でしまった expresses the action/movement is completed and often connotes that the speaker feels regret or nagative feelings about it.

ty. Heres something else im having trouble with ( I heard this in an anime so might be errors)

彼らは青春の2文字の前ならば Can I get a translation for this please?
どんな一般的な解釈も
社会通念も ねじ曲げてみせる

Where does the "if(from naraba)" play in here.
For them if it is in front of "youths" two characters ~~
is the miseru at the end of magete from "to try" ?
Doesent mageru refer to screwing in a screw, so it seems weird here.

彼らにかかれば 嘘も秘密も
罪科も失敗さえも

they speak fast so it might be kakereba or kakareba not sure. How would I translate this part? I havent found too much online given this context

I would translate 青春の2文字の前ならば as "when they do it in the name of 'youth'".

No. ~てみせる doesn't from ~てみる. It means "to do something and show it to people/us" here.

ねじ曲げる is a verb, meaning "to distort/twist (intentionally)". (ねじ is not "screw". It's from a verb ねじる.)

ねじまげる【捩じ曲げる/捻じ曲げる】
2 故意にゆがめる。「事実を―・げた報道」

かかれば is correct. How about "by their hands"? (lit. when/if they treat it)

two questions

ならば can be translated as "when" as well? Or this is just for better wordplay.

can i have an example sentence or two with てみせる with a translation please I still dont really get it.

EDIT: wait I think i get it is it saying

showing (people) that a generally accepted idea in the world can be distorted

Yes, なら(ば) can mean "when" depending on the context.

It's more likely "they intentionally distort those ideas and show it to us". The writer has negative feelings about it.
