Definitely. "~~on" totally performs the function of だれかに『（責任を）おっかぶせる』 in English.

While in English to pull someone's leg mean to jokingly deceive or tease them.
This would be an excellent example of how direct translations can sometimes cause confusion or misunderstanding.

I hope someone can help me understand/translate this:
その後俺はカナダに
永住はしないが
しょっちゅう
家を空ける為に
こちらから
連絡するまで
待つ事を約束させ
彼女を帰したのだった
It's from a manga I'm reading, and the context is that this is the monologue of a man who was apparently just convinced by his girlfriend not to move to Canada. Or she just tried to convince him. Could also be that he only told her he'd go to Canada, when he's really going somewhere else. The chapter ends shortly after this.
My guess on a translation would be:
"After this, I didn't move to Canada, but in order to frequently leave the house, I made her promise to wait until I contact [her]. Then I sent her home."
But I'm not really sure, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

A girl, thinking of how she dealt with her life until now, is wondering about herself :
よそう今の私にはやらなきゃいけない事がある.
I've only found :
よそう (v5u) to serve; to dish up; to prepare;
I suppose, it's some kind of adverb, not really a verb for beginning a sentence.
Then, I am always uneasy with : なきゃいけない
It's with やる, right. So it's : have to do ?
....the things I have to do.
A little help will be very appreciated.

Very close. The only two parts, the interpretations of 永住する and 為に, are wrong. 永住する doesn't mean just to move, and 為に means せいで, i.e., "because of" here.

Where did you get "shield" out of that?
"Even if it gets wet it doesn't tear; I've heard you can use it in place of an umbrella".
Also, it doesn't say anything about a guy reading an article in the bath. That would be お風呂で記事を読む. It says "A newspaper you can read in the bath".

The only part that I don't get is the お堅いで.
Does it mean he's famous "by means of hard [work]" or that he's "stiff/uptight" and famous? Or maybe something else?
Either would make sense in the context.

There must be a typo. It should be お堅いので有名な "famous for being stiff".
Which half can't you figure out?
