Actually, I'm not the biggest fan of Yoshimoto, I much prefer Haruki Murakami in terms of Japanese fiction! I've read Kitchen, Goodbye Tsugumi and Asleep. I'm doing a little bit of research on her for a paper, it's pretty tough to get info on her, so I'm reading her diary to gain more insight on her. It's definitely tough though, since my Japanese is so subpar but it's really helpful that really nice people like you are helping out!

Ah, I gotcha. I've read Kitchen in English, and 不倫と南米 in Japanese (sort of... I had a tough time following it and it was a while ago, so I don't remember much other than the beginning). I've only read a little of Murakami. I've probably read more Akutagawa than anyone else. He's got some good stuff.

I think ちゃっかり持って行きやがって would be more likely "He shrewdly took away/got the (precious) stone".

BTW, isn't it a typo of 一生稼げないくらい?

I translated it along the lines of: At the bank, even I try to complain a little and I was only advised about my investment trust which is like getting used to being complained at.
Something about the passive form + なれている really confuses me and I don't really even know what the subject of the sentence is...

Yeah it involved Buddha! Basically it's about Buddha trying to save someone from Hell by casting down a spider's thread so they can escape from Hell. Kind of heavy for a children's story haha.

Yeah, that's quite the same also in Japanese. That's why I suspected there must be a typo.

Akutagawa and Natsume Souseki would be the most frequently-appearing authors in Japanese language textbooks. I've read 地獄変 but don't remember where it was, maybe in a class, or maybe personally.

The reason why it's hard to translate accurately is quite simple; "we need the context". What question did you ask her?

貌利太仁亜 is an old kanji name of ブリタニア or "Britannia". Thus, 大貌利太仁亜國 means "the Great Britain(U.K.)". FYI, there is no implication of "contempt" in it.;-)

Old kanji? That would explain why the online dictionaries weren't really helping much.
I had assumed that there may be some contempt because of how the rest of the text was, but either way, that makes much more sense.

I am confused with this part as well:
これから文庫２冊分と雑誌掲載分のゲラがまとめてやってくるけど、今手元にないからないのといっしょだもん（笑）！だれがなんと言っても見えないもん！
and translated it as "After this, although all the gallery proofs of the two paperbacks and magazine articles came, because I don't have them on hand now, they are not with me, haha! No doubt who didn't see it!"

I translated ゲラ as gallery proofs but I really have no idea what they are!! Thanks in advance!

Ahh thank you! I have no idea if it is an abbreviation, in the dictionary 文庫 just translates to paperback book as opposed to 文庫本 which is mass-published book I think...?
And I just wiki'd gallery proof, it's galley proof which are I guess copies of revised books for proofreading in the final stages of writing...I guess that makes sense!

Why are you ignoring the Ｂ系の服 part?
