Need a word or phrase translated?

Quick question:

So I know こだわる means to obsess over something, but if used in this context:

当店のこだわり
料理長のこだわり

does it translate to something like "Our store's/Head chef's philosophy"?

It's more like a focus, or attention to detail. Incidentally, I remember one of my teachers talking about how it was weird that it had gotten this usage, since it had had an exclusively negative connotation before that.

Hi all!

What does it mean by "話題に乗れない"
It comes from this sentence:
宗教の話は聞き手を黙らせるのには最適ですが、一度使うと翌年からクリスマスの話題に乗れなくなるので、長期的な付き合いの人には使わないほうが良いでしょう。

Thanks in advance! (and happy new year!)

In that context, it's almost same to 話に加われない or "not to be able to join a conversation (about Christmas)".

日本経済が復活したのは、冷戦が起こったからでした。アメリカは当初、「日本が二度とアメリカに反抗できないように使用」と考えていた。所が、ソ連・東欧・北朝鮮等の共産国家陣営の出現により、日本を保護せざるを得なくなったのです

~ざるを得ない is a set phrase meaning you don't have any choice but to do X. Here, 保護せざるを得ない means the US had no choice but to protect Japan. ~くなる is a state change or a process, so they went from not needing to protect Japan to having no choice but to protect them. する's ~ざる form is せざる. Does that about cover your questions?

Can anyone help me with this one..?

Hi, I would like to know if there are alot of differences between 盗む, 奪う, 取る when referring to steal and rob?
盗む = Strongest, most general and most clearly implying a crime
取る = Vague, broad not necessarily insinuating illegal act (English "took")
奪う = Closer to "rob" and used for something of value being snatched away ("ki ni naru" situations with a victim).

Hi! well I have a phrase I need to translate very precisely because is for a tattoo. The phrase is:

"I steal a kiss from your sleeping shadow moves"

(taken from the song "in the arms of sleep" of the smashing pumpkins)

As I will design the tattoo, it would be great if I could emphasize some words, but I don't know a thing about Japanese T_T so If someone could help me I'll be very very very grateful (and if you need a designer or illustrator, I offer my services in exchange!)

ところが60年代になると、そんな 「殿様ビジネス」 が出来ない状況が出てきます。ケネディの時代には、アメリカの貿易収支が悪化していった。それで、アメリカ政府は、「バイ・アメリカン」だとか、「シップ・アメリカン」などの政策を打ち出し、アメリカ製品購入の奨励、アメリカ船舶使用の優先を進めざるを得なくなっていきます。

What kind of grammar structure is 進め+ざる?and what does the last sentence actually mean?

The grammar structure is the same as your last question:

日本を保護せざるを得なくなったのです。

That is, one cannot help but do whatever comes before ざるを得ない. In this case, The American government has no choice but to advance the promotion of buying American goods and prioritize the use of American ships, or something along those lines. Hopefully someone else can give a clearer translation.

Hi all,

I was wondering how to do the negative form of a colour after the object.

For example, "this car is not red". would it be "kono kuruma wa akaku nai"? or "kono kuruma wa aka de nai"? or something else?

Thanks!

The former would be more common. "Kono kuruma no iro wa aka de wa nai" also can be used.

so ざる must be followed by をえない?
No. They just said ざるを得ない is a set phrase. ざる is an adjectival form(連体形) of the (classical) auxiliary verb ず which is equivalent to ない in modern Japanese. Thus, it's used also with other words, e.g. in 働かざるもの食うべからず(=働かないものは食べてはならない).

Translate....

Hello! I stumbled onto this forum hoping to improve my Japanese skills (I'm a native Chinese so learning Japanese isn't exactly a dip into a new ocean). I'm trying to translate a children's book, Little Red Riding Hood, but there are some phrases it uses that I don't understand.
むかし むかし あるところに とても かわいい おんなのこが おりました
What I think it says: Once upon a time (there lived a?) very cute girl who (no idea?).

Thank you for all your help!
(this is going to be a very long battle, seeing as this is the first page -_-)

あるところ (或る所) = 有個地方 = an unspecified location
おりました (居りました) = いました = いた = 有 (I think) = (there) was

So it's "a long time ago, there once was a very cute girl (in a certain place)." I've got to say, that あるところに part seems unnecessary. At the very least, it is in English, and I'm not quite sure how to put it. It seems better to leave it out all together. If the Chinese is wrong or confusing just ignore it (corrections would be welcome, though, should you feel so inclined). 😌

もう当然のように
how can I correctly translate this?

クリントンは1期目、ドル安に誘導することで、貿易赤字を縮小する政策をとりました。皆さんももう忘れてしまったかもしれませんが、当時、日本はいじめられまくっていた

Hmm, kind of hard to tell without context, but maybe "like it's already a certainty" would work?

I think you are right. The context is

クリントンは最悪の時期に大統領になりました。もう当然のように、「アメリカは破産するのではないか?」と言われていました。

クリントンは1期目、ドル安に誘導することで、貿易赤字を縮小する政策をとりました。皆さんももう忘れてしまったかもしれませんが、当時、日本はいじめられまくっていた
Are you asking also about まくっていました(I believe this is correct)? If so, it's "Japan got picked on constantly/frequently".

4 (動詞の連用形に付いて)ずっとその動作を続ける。盛んに…する。「書き―・る」「走り―・る」

Yes, the meaning is the same between いました and いた. I said about consistency in the forms.

クリントンは最悪の時期に大統領になりました
もう当然のように、「アメリカは破産するのではないか?」と言われていました
クリントンは1期目、ドル安に誘導することで、貿易赤字を縮小する政策をとりました
皆さんももう忘れてしまったかもしれませんが、当時、日本はいじめられまくっていた

The last いじめられまくっていた sounds strange.
