Need a word or phrase translated?

Yeah, I was just going to say that repeating ルームメート is unnecessary in the first place, regardless of article. But if you were to repeat it, I think Elizabeth's version is the one to go with.

ルームメートはなまけものなので、ルームメートにときどきへやをそうじしてほしい.

There is a change in inflection from な to だ that I've forgotten the complete explanation for (it's lying around here somewhere...😌 ) except to say that the former only connects to particles の、ので、のに....

And I would avoid the repeat use of ルームメート. 😊

Oh, that makes sense! And you're right, it's unnecessary to repeat roommate. Thank you!

Okay, I have two more questions! I had to translate these questions:

1. Because I have no experience of being hospitalized, I didn't understand why Robert was worried about [hospital] meals.
I wrote にゅういんのけいけんがないから、どうしてロバートさんがびょういんのごはんについてしんぱいしていたかわかりませんでした。

(With Kanji: 入院の経験がないから、どうしてロバートさんが(病院の)ご飯についてしんぱいしていたかわかりませんでした。)

I feel like the translation is wrong somehow - unnatural, maybe? Or perhaps I have the order wrong?

2. Because I tried to make a watch without listening to my younger sister's explanation, I made the same mistakes many times continuously and I was scolded by my parents.

I have bits and pieces:
いもうとのせつめいをきかないでとけいをつくってみたから、なんどもおなじまちがいをしたので、りょうしんのおこされてしまいました。
(妹の説明を聞かないで時計を作ってみたから、何度も同じまちがいをしたので、両親におこされてしまいました。)

I don't know where to put continuously... :emoji_confounded:

The translation is not wrong, but it would be more intelligible to specify who the subject of the subordinate clause is.

my attempt:
私は入院したことがないので、どうしてロバートさんが病院食の心配をしているか/いたかわかりませんでした。

作ろうとした is more appropriate when you failed to make the watch.

妹の説明を聞かないで時計を作ろうとしたから/ので、何度も同じまちがいをし、両親におこれてしまいました。

Hey guys, I hope someone can help me with this sentence.

ファイバーの先端から光・熱が出るので、必ず保護キャップを外し光が物 に当たらないようにする。

I get the first part is talking about light and heat escaping from the end of the fiber. After that, I'm not so sure.

必ず保護キャップを外し

Is this bit talking about when you remove the cap, or is it saying that you should remove the cap.

光が物に当たらないようにする。

For this bit is it saying that you should avoid the light touching other objects, or is it the other way around.

Thanks for any help.

The latter is correct, since it's 必ず保護キャップを外し. 保護キャップを外したら is used for "when you remove the protection cap".

光が物に当たらないようにする。

It's the former.

It's 肝になるのは or "the (most) important point/thing is~". You can think it's almost the same to 肝心なのは.
世界観を発表してます doesn't mean 世界に発表してます.(世界観を表現してます would be more common, though.)
The guitar solo expresses the view of the world of the CD version by using delay with the modulation effects, but the point is the riff.

Got it. Thank you!

:bravo:

Hi! I am new here. 🙂:)
Can I ask if anyone could help me to translate this sentence:
" To you, I am just a kid"

Many thanks!

I have a few that need translating please help.

Kare wa neko o katte imasu
Kare wa hon o motte imasu
Kanojo wa sakana o katte imasu
Karera wa pen o motte imasu.
Kanojotachi
Otonatachi wa
Otona
Onna no hitotachi wa gohan o motte imasu
imasuka

What is this for ? One possibility is
Anata ni totte wa, watashi wa kodomo na no ne...

Actually the scenario is about me trying to say that this particular guy is much more matured than me in his thinking and actions, to him I just behave like a kid' ...something like that.
Thank you for the translation! 🙂: May I know if there is a more suitable phrase?
:emoji_thinking:

Sup guys, first post. I have several translation questions but here's a relatively simple one... How do you communicate the concept of sappy or cheesy in Japanese? I've tried using some things I think are close but nothing seems to hit the mark. Any ideas?

In what context?

In what context?

For example, "this poem tries to be romantic but comes off as sappy." "The love story in Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones is incredibly cheesy."

In a slight different usage, "The low budget horror movie had a good plot but it was ruined by the cheesy special effects."

I see. :)
I would translate sappy as 感傷的 (kanshouteki) or お涙頂戴的 (onamidachoudaiteki) and cheesy as 陳腐 (chinpu) or 安っぽい (yasuppoi).

Note: I chose the ordinary/colloquial terms for each.

In addition, as for the latter example, ちゃちい[chachii]/ちゃっちい[chacchii] would work as a more colloquial/slangy alternative to 安っぽい.

Thanks for the input guys. I could see 安っぽい being pretty clear applied to low-budget etc. I didn't know 感傷的 had a negative nuance to it - you wouldn't have to use, for example, 感傷的すぎる? お涙頂戴 seems pretty amusing. Never heard 陳腐 before but that's good to know, before I used 決まり文句 to describe a cliche, though that undoubtedly sounded odd in some of the cases I applied it (for example, to a musical piece etc).

ちゃちな was my first thought for shoddy/chintzy/cheesy as well. ださい and 悪趣味な are a couple more.

Hey guys,
I have several questions that I can't figure out (or are just seeking confirmation to see if it's correctly done), so could I please get some help on this?
1) 月曜日から不運なことが絶えず起こりました.
I want to say "Since Monday, unfortunate events continuously happened (to me)".
Is this correct? Also, could I use the passive form for 起こる (起こられる)instead, even though no one caused them to occur?
2) 完全に濡れました!
"I got completely wet!" <- Should it be な after 完全, instead of に since it's a な-adj, or is it just unnecessary?
3) If I want to say, "Aside from X, ~"
Is "X以外、~" correct?
For example, "Aside from English, I can speak two other languages."
"英語以外、二つ言葉が話せます."
4) "X-さんがお茶を返してほしかったが、Xさんはしませんでした."
"I wanted X to return the tea (to me), but he did not (return it)." Is this the right verb to use in this case?
Also, is there suppose to be a です after ほしかった, or am I not suppose to use it since it's a subordinate clause?
Thank you all, and I apologize for the list of questions!!!

Generally you did quite well:cool:, just a few points to say;

1) 月曜日から不運なことが絶えず起こりました.
I want to say "Since Monday, unfortunate events continuously happened (to me)".
Is this correct? Also, could I use the passive form for 起こる (起こられる)instead, even though no one caused them to occur?

Your sentence is right.
You can also use 起こっています if the situation does not change and such events are still happening.
If you want to use passive, 起こる does not really fit.
I might say
月曜日から不運な出来事に見舞われています。 or 見舞われ続けています。

完全に is correct.
完全な is used to modify noun while 完全に is for verb/adjective.

Alternative expression is ずぶ濡れになりました.
ずぶ濡れ = soaking wet.

3) If I want to say, "Aside from X, ~"
Is "X以外、~" correct?
For example, "Aside from English, I can speak two other languages."
"英語以外、二つ言葉が話せます."

XX以外 is correct though usually it is accompanied by に.
Alternatively, you can say ~のほかに.

Xさんがお茶を返してほしかった means the person X, not you, wanted to have the tea returned. (And when describing someone else's "wants/needs" ほしがる instead of ほしい is used.)

When 私 is the subject,
Xさんお茶を返してほしかった

Thanks a lot for your help!

Though, could I trouble you with questions regarding your explanations (which were all really clear :D)? :sorry:

1) The events have stopped in this case. So, is 月曜日から不運なことを起こり続けました a possible alternate?

And about helping verbs in general (so like to continue to happen or to help to explain, etc), are the two verbs just connect by taking the stem of one and putting it in front of the other ( as in 続け起こる or 手伝い説明する)?

If that is the case, for the order of the verbs, does it matter which is first or second? (起こり続ける or 続け起こる)?

2) Is this for all adjectives in general?
As in for な-adj, Xな Noun and Xに Verb/adj
And for い-adj, Xい Noun and Xくに Verb/adj

And, I apologize for my endless stream of questions... :sorry:

The structure "the -masu stem of a verb + a verb" is called 複合動詞 or "compound verb". Not all of verbs can be the second verb(後項動詞). Furthermore, the relation of the two verbs completely depends on them. In some cases, it's just to connect thier meanings(e.g. 切り刻む, 振り回す), and in another cases, the second verb acts as an auxiliary verb apart from its original meaning(e.g. わかりかねる, 焼き尽くす).

to continue to happen: 起こり続ける

to happen continuously: 続け起こる(起こる can be a second verb, as in 巻き起こる, but can't be connected with 続き.)

to help to explain: 説明するのを助ける(助ける can't be a second verb.)

2) Is this for all adjectives in general?
As in for な-adj, Xな Noun and Xに Verb/adj
And for い-adj, Xい Noun and Xくに Verb/adj
に is not needed for the adverbial form of i-adjectives.

静かな部屋で静かに過ごす。
速い車で速く走る。
