Yes, it can be translated as lover or sweetheart.
In my opinion, a "koibito" is a person you are serious about--from a steady girl(boy)friend to someone to whom you are engaged to be married.

No, 勇気づける is one word, meaning "to encourage""to cheer up".
Asada always gets encouraged/cheered up by Hamasaki's songs, by playing her songs during the training, etc.

Just what it's original meaning is -- "rise." It's used a bit figuratively, though. "Words of well-wishing and appreciation even came out of the 芸能界 for Asada." (What's a good translation for 芸能界, anyway? "The showbusiness world?")

I just asked a friend in Tokyo and he thought it was a more focused sentence the other way, too. That Hamasaki is a big fan of Asada. Maybe his English, or maybe a regular characteristic of Japanese grammar....I'm so confused.

Of course if Hamasaki is the speaker then the remarks are targeted at Asada, who is a big fan....

It was more than potentially confusing -- I was confused. I actually tracked down the original article to be sure. Then I thought the same thing Toritoribe said, that 浅田の大ファンの浜崎あゆみ would be used if Hamasaki were a fan of Asada.

But then I thought, if it's 浅田が大ファンだ, isn't the only interpretation Asada is a fan of Hamasaki? How could it be the other way? I can't remember what was going through my head when I somehow had a case made for both interpretations.

I agree the most realistic translation is with Asada as the speaker, in which the phrase 浅田が大ファンの浜崎あゆみ becomes essentially analogous to Asada the subject, one who likes, and Hamasaki the object of her affections, or the liked. (浅田が好きなのは浜崎). Is it even possible to consider a structure in which 浅田が is talking about 浜崎, modified by who is a big fan of mine ((私の)大ファンの浜崎))???

But if it is a quote of 浜崎 directly, which doesn't seem to make sense unless she is returning the praise in kind, it is clearly from the standpoint of addressing her remarks to 浅田 as a fan of hers, not referring to herself as a fan of 浅田.
