I heard this on a TV program but not sure if I heard correct:

これなんっていうものだ

Basically he is asking "What is this?" but what I wanted to check was that what I heard is that, i.e. that does that make sense? (He was speaking very quickly so my slow ears couldn't quite make it out )

i think he's saying: "why you said that?" or "what did you say?"

Sorry I should have put it more in context. Basically its from SMAPxSMAP (07/09) and one of the guys is dressed up as a samurai pointing at a telephone saying なんっていうものだ？ so I am pretty sure he's asking "what is this" but I just wanted to confirm what I've written down actually makes sense.

Breaking it down I understand it as "What [quote particle] called thing is?"

Probably これなんていうものだ？
And your interpretation is correct. That means "What's this?"

Since you brought up 当て字 is there a difference between that and early 万葉仮名？

万葉仮名 is more systematic. There are some rules which kanji is used for each pronunciation. Thus, kanji is basically used as a kind of phonogram in 万葉仮名.

全然なんの問題もない

I understand it to be "Not at all what kind of problem also isn't" or properly translated "That's not a problem also"

However the main bit that's confusing me is なんの and how it's used here, but also the sentence in general is a little confusing even if I sort of get the meaning. Thank you to whoever answers, it's most appreciated

edit: usually I would expect someone who wants to say "It's not a problem" to say "問題ない" from my experience so that's why this is a little confusing to me.

It is conjugated from one verb, "sumu," which means "reside in" or "inhabit," but there are other "sumu" verbs as well. Chris is probably right. Just know we just can't tell which one for sure without the context. :emoji_flushed:

If I remember correctly, "DOKURO" means skull... then wouldn't that line mean "a grim skull shouted at me". I looked online and people have translated it as "pirate" though... Does anyone know why that is? Is it some sort of slang?

ドクロ is the skull & crossbones pirate flag. It isn't pirate directly.

It would be not よるし but よろしい.

Probably the game asked if your registered name was OK or not.

Suisan-gyoukai de hataraiteimashita.

漁業に携わっていました。
Gyogyou ni tazusawatteimashita.

The former one "suisan-gyoukai" means more wide category of business than "gyogyou", which can be used when you worked in a seafood processing company or like that.
