yeah... I actually know that... I'm just probably too used to 話 so I kinda overlooked it... that's why I said stupid me ^^;;; But it teaches me to read more careful in the future... like the (german) saying goes: Aus Fehlern wird man klug! ("From mistakes you become smart"/"We learn from our mistakes")

As for 「～てはじめて・・・」, it is a little clearer if I say

In my textbook we have grammar explanations, but not always do they help to actually really get the proper meaning... yours is so much easier to get

like for てはじめて it's:
それが最低条件である and than some examples (like the one above)

and underneath another possible meaning:
それがきつかけとなって and again examples

This gets really confusing... ^^

ah btw... does となって have any special meaning?

I am trying to 'catch' two phrases I heard on TV. I know the meaning but can't quite place exactly what was said. So if anyone could fill in the blanks, that would be great.

1. 'Just Kidding' - What I heard is 'なっちゃて'? - Is that right?

2. 'Are you Crazy!?' - I heard something like 'じょあんか！'

For are you crazy, I know another phrase is "正気か！？'

Are those correct? If not, anyone have any ideas what the correct word is?

You got the first one right. To be more precise, the first one should read なんちゃって meaning "just kidding!"
I'm not sure exactly what its "original" form, it could be ・・・なんて言っちゃって.
I have no clue about the 2nd one, though.
正気か！？ means "are you sane?" if literally translated and yes, it is understood "are you crazy?"
I hope someone will fill in the second phrase.

The difference between "to natte" and "ni natte" is that "to natte" uses the particle "to" which means "in this way; in what way" correct? So roughly translated it would be "It became in the way that it was the beginning/trigger". I'm not positive on this one though.

Yes, I feel there is a little difference between "to" and "ni", when use "to natte" and "ni natte". "to naru" shows the changes of something more than "ni naru", Like in,

その村は湖となった。
その村は湖になった。

If, we only use a single sentence, the second one is better, while the first one will be weird. But, if we explain about the causes why that village has turned into a lake first, then the first one is better.

Your translation "in this way; in what way" for "to" here, make a sense.

I am not sure about the underlined part. I can grasp the overall meaning from guestimating, but I don't recall seeing this word "aredo". Is this "aredo" an archaic usage, or just a typo? The articles in Wikipedia seem to have tons of very formal and stiff words, so maybe this one is one of those? It's not in the Yahoo! online dictionary, so that's why I am requesting you guy's help.

It isn't a typo.
あれど is an old (classic) expression which is still in use, especially in writing.

已然形＋ど is 逆説の確定条件. （あれ is 已然形 of あり, which is equivalent to ある in modern Japanese. (已然形 is conditional form.)
あれど can be rephrased as あっても.
i.e. 本来は方言程度の違いはあっても、基本的に同じ言語なのだが、・・・

Speaking of Classical Japanese, would you guys happen to know any resources (esp. internet sites or books) that introduce Classical Japanese which are still used today? I know there's no shortcut in learning Classical Japanese, but for the busy people who are not gonna read classics in Japanese anytime soon, it would be nice to know a few common classical phrases which are used today, so that when phrases like "無きにしも非ず"is used by a native, us foreigners can still at least follow the rest of the conversation. I apologize for digressing

I'm not sure if such a book or a site is available for those "classical" expressions, I hope someone will post the good resources.
Meanwhile I'd like to suggest some alternatives:
(1) online dictionary
goo辞書 - 国語・英語・四字熟語・中国語のオンライン辞書
If you find something unfamiliar (like ど), you can check it up on this dictionary, by choosing 国語辞典 and checking 完全一致.
It gives some explanation about the usage in modern Japanese.

The only part of this sentence that is bothering me is "新幹線の開通にともなって". Is it correct to say this as "By accompanying the opening of the Shinkansen...(the condition/state of the salarymen's business trip changed)" ? I may just be thinking too hard again, but I can't be sure just by arguing with myself on this.

Exactly. Think of it as a stronger, more masculine expression of "yo."
