Need a word or phrase translated?

I've been reading this type of phrase for it seems like forever, but never questioned it. I thought it was time I try to get down to its grammatical roots.

人気のあるスポーツ = This is the sentence I normally see. What if it were "人気あるスポーツ"? 人気 is a noun, so the "の" can't be the placeholder for "koto" which I normally see it as. Is it grammatically incorrect to just say "人気あるスポーツ"?

grammatically, you should have a particle between 人気 and ある; in this case, either が or の are acceptable. A similar question has been asked in another thread about the use of の in a similar sentence, but I can't seem to locate the other thread.

Question about の | Japan Forum

上記のことをそのまま書くと意味を通じさせることは出来るかもしれませんが、
確かに、文法的には正しくないですよね。

"の" can't be the placeholder for "koto" これはどういう意味?例文を書いてくださいね。

それは、使っている動詞や、によって変わるので一概に言えませんよ。☝

When I see things such as, "スポーツをはじめたのは..." or "亀を乗ったのは朝起きてからです"

In my mind, I see it similar to "koto", but the difference is something I don't remember hearing about specifically, other than it being something that "affects you" and is "more personal". At least that is how a friend of mine once explained it to me.

hi there guys! I am new here but I think I can help you out there a bit.
So let have a go.

人気あるスポーツ perfectly works in daily/informal conversation, like....

最近人気あるスポーツって何?
サッカーって人気あるスポーツだよね。

It is also well accepted in writing, your Japanese exam wouldn't say ok though, lol
As a native Japanese speaker, having said that, I personally put either の or が between 人気 and スポーツ(and any other 名詞) as they sound way way way natural for people from every generation.

Why can't it be simply 人気のスポース like you would if you were saying 人気のチーズ、 人気のアニメ、人気の料理。。。☝

hum I may say 人気のsomething, too.

Ok, I am telling that is surely 人気がある when I use 人気あるスポーツ
so I guess you need to say ある intentionally here,
where as 人気のスポーツ just focus on スポーツ itself, it doesn't imply how popular it is. That's only one of the 人気のあるsomething.

does it make sense? I am not sure my English works correctly.

hi, can you guys translate the following

いにしえの昔から、邪悪な力を持つと語り継がれてきた伝説の杖。
その杖を封印していた城に、ドルマゲスという道化師が現れ、杖の封印を解き放ってしまいます。
目覚めた邪悪な力の呪いによって、城の時は止まり、国王や姫も姿を変えられてしまいました。
ただ一人呪いから逃れたあなたは、城や国王たちを救うための冒険に旅立つのです。

Since it seems confusing 「の」and 「こと」, may I keep going? Sorry if you have already heard about this.

These are the sentences you can NOT replace の with こと.
They all are telling who/what, when, where and why.

留学するの(when)は来年です。
会うの(when)はいつですか?。
歌うの(who)は誰ですか?。
結婚したの(who)は彼女の兄です。
仕事をするの(when)は明日からです。
一緒に遊んだの(where)はあの公園です。
失敗するのは(why)練習不足だからだ。
返事が来るの(when)は1週間後です。
勉強するのは(where)この教室だ。
人気があるの(what)は野球です。
スポーツを始めたの(why)は健康のためです。

Sentences の can be replaced with こと.
They are always followed by verb, adjective, adverb, form to do with your emotion. and other noun.

留学すること(の)が目標だ。
会うこと(の)が楽しみです。
歌うこと(の)が好きだ。
結婚したこと(の)を後悔している。
仕事をすること(の)は面倒くさい。
一緒に遊んだこと(の)を覚えている。
返事が来ること(の)を待っています。
失敗すること(の)には慣れています。
勉強すること(の)は得意だ。
人気があること(の)はうれしい。
スポーツを始めたこと(の)を知っています。

I may be wrong, but this is what I realised so far.
Hope this will help you in a way.

そうそう, またうっかり書きました..ごめんね. :p 「亀に乗った」は文法的に正しいです. 「乗った」は intransitive..忘すれてしまった.

Those are very good examples @umbaba san! Thanks for taking the time to write those all down. It's very appreciated! It's so much easier to read these characters after printing them out, so I'll go ahead and take a look at it that way.

can somebody translate this into japanese (romanji) and katakana cute little rabit had a fly on his nose

I know its a stupid line but its a line from a song in Belgium an nederlands
Me and my friends are making translations of that sentence and I would love to have it in japanese

Warakawa & Tenshi,

If you look carefully, most posters try the translation first and ask for help after that.

Give it a try first. :-)

I would like for a phrase to be translated.
Phrase(English): "Anywhere that light exists, shadow must also exist."
In the meantime, I'll be trying it myself.

EDIT: I think I got this right: どこに光が有れば、陰が有る。

ことらです。

一つ前の文章で、私が誤った認識の書き込みをしたので訂正します。

Since the recognition which I mistook by the text in front of one was written in, it corrects.

😌

I think a sentence which starts with "どこに" is interrogative one.
So, how about "光のあるところには、陰もある。"?
Or, "陰を生まない光はない"(It's not a literal translation, though)?
