It's an inversion. The normal order of the words is 夕日がまぶしくて、アイツの笑顔を見ていられなかった.

見られなかった: the past of the negative potential of 見る
見ていられなかった: the past progressive of negative potential of 見る


The result of this battle may have been settled. = I was destined to lose this battle.
"Battle" is a metaphor, off course.


That's not the problem we pointed out. We are talking about the difference between 宿題をしてしまう vs 宿題をしてしまった (or 宿題をする vs 宿題をした).

Also in your translation, is there a particular reason you used the word "lose" when you equated those two.
Battle may have been settled doesent imply losing, or does the nuance give it off?
 
Yeah, that's right. It can be "win". I interpreted it from the context.
 
I dont really understand the shoubu its confused me always, even when It was introduced in my textbook. It has meanings of
Victory or defeat;match;contest;game
And here you used it as battle I believe

Why does it have the meaning victory or defeat. Does that mean it can mean " To lose" and "To win" depending on context?
 
It totally depends on the context.
e.g.
勝負に勝つ/負ける
to win/lose a match/contest/game/battle

勝負をつける
to settle victory or defeat

勝負が決まる means "to win" or "to lose". (A match/contest/game/battle has finished, and as the result, one side wins and the other side loses.)

From the context, the speaker "has lost" (and s/he feels this might be settled previously).

Hi, I came across this short sentence.

おまえもご挨拶せんか

I wanted to ask if it is supposed to be the same as おまえもご挨拶ありませんか , as a condensed version? Or is there some different root used in the conjugation?

If not, can someone explain the meaning of せん there?
 
It's a dialectal version of しない. It's the ん-negation version, similar to 知らん, わからん, 行かん, できん, などなど.

I see. The last sentence looks very similar to a form I learned a while back with なければならない although not exactly the same. I dont understand the jist of the whole phrase

"I understood well, that a reality like that should not have occured, however. By any chance if a miracle did not occur.....~~"

So is he thinking this statement or what is the use of 思わなければやっていられない
 
Pay attention to the ends of verbs. It's 起こるはずがない, not 起こったはずがない. Also, the occurrence of a miracle is not what the condition is placed on here. I think maybe you haven't learned certain elements of もしかして奇跡起こらないかななんて. ～ないかな can be used as a wish that something will happen, like 彼女、早く来ないかな ("I wish my girlfriend would get here soon."). なんて is a quoting particle in this instance. The verb is probably 思う, since the そうでも in the next sentence refers back to もしかして奇跡起こらないかななんて. Next, a couple of hints:

なければ -- conditional form of ない
思わない -> 思わなければ (from simple negation to conditional negation -- "not think" to "if (I) don't think)
やっていられない is a set expression meaning something like "get along" or maybe even "survive" in some cases, although I don't think it means "survive" like 生き残る or 生き延びる do, just a dramatic way of saying something (like "I can't survive without my designer shoes!" for example).

so is the last sentence saying If I dont think ( stuff in first part) then we will get along. Also what exactly is the speaker wishing for persay. In your example its a bit more obvious but here I',m not sure mabye because it sounds weird in english.

Sorry for interrupting, but I found this comment interesting. Does this mean usage of やっていられない is always and only coupled with a negative conditional or negative statement? I'm not too familiar with its usage, so I'd like to confirm this point if possible.

It's similar to と here, but it has a sense of looking down on what's being quoted. So, "I'll think, 'I wish, perhaps a miracle would occur,'" with the feeling that the speaker knows it's stupid or not going to happen.

"If I don't think something like that, I can't get by." They know it's not likely to happen, but thinking that it might helps them get through the day. That's how I'm reading it.


It's used on its own sometimes. If someone does something that exasperates you and you don't want to deal with them, for instance, you can say もうやってられないよ or something like that. It's usage isn't as narrow as it seemed from my other post, but I was interpreting it in that situation.

以前はというのも、現在ではあまり行われていないからだ。 "Though that was said of the past, the present isn't much different though."

The general definition of 行われる is "to hold" or "to take place" right? So would the translation above be correct in this instance?

Would 以前はというのも、現在ではあまり違っていないからだ also work? Are there possible implications with the usage of 行われる instead?

現在ではあまり行われていない means "(unlike the past,) the subject is rarely held nowadays", thus, the present is different from the past. So, it should be 現在では違っているからだ, if you rephrase it.
