Basically, 方[かた] is for people, whereas 方[ほう] is for direction/side. Indeed かた originally, and still today, refers to direction/side, and かた as a polite way of referring to a person is derived from the original meaning, but it doesn't imply "direction" anymore.When I learned 方 I think that is the correct kanji. Anyways when I learned that I was told a more literal translation might be "side". For example. この方はperson's nameです。 This side person's name is. But can it only be used for people? Or is it more like a little side? Like on this side we have this on the other side we have this. Just curious. ^-^

I would say 悪いけど/すまないけど/申し訳ないけど、ほっといてくれないか.
I was thinking of a rather angry and bossy woman (depending on many different kinds of intonation). Is もう、放っておいてくれ also acceptable in a variety of informal situations for men ? But no of course not in combination with 悪いけど/すまないけど/申し訳ないけど that makes it sound indirect and humble.Ex-GIRL friend, unless he is a gay, since the speaker of ほっといてくれないか is a male. And I would NEVER say 悪いけど/すまないけど/申し訳ないけど for a stalker...

I have no idea really whether ～ないか is ever used by women speakers (particularly young women), but didn't it somehow originally belong to female language 「～だよ、～じゃないか」（本来女性言葉） ? ほっといてください alone is I think for sure 乱暴 whether done by either sex.What you are referring to seems like ほっといてくれる？ ほっといてくれないか and ほっといてくれ are both male wordings.
Look again real hard at the part where you got "three people" out of it.
