Need a word or phrase translated?

「あさひや」というのが本屋というのは初めて聞きました。

This 'to iu no ga, to iu no wa' construction caught my eye recently.

Couldn't he just have said 「あさひや」というのが(or wa)本屋と初めて聞きました。:?

すみません。I'm a little nervous sometimes about trying new sentences in Japanese, so if sometimes my postings don't make much sense. :sorry:
You don't need feel nervous about writing Japanese sentense. Noone can improve their language skill without making mistakes. If your posting don't make much sense, I will ask you what you want to say and can help you express what you want to say in Japanese.
You are not the only one who feel nervous about posting sentenses in second language. I always worry whether my posts make sense or not. I cannot know whether my post make sense or not unless a native English speakers would point out that. くよくよしても上達しないので,気にせずどんどん日本語で書き込みましょう!

I don't understand the grammar here (元受刑者の社会復帰や、貧困、麻薬対策についても). The subject of reformed ex convicts advancing Bush's agenda abruptly followed by 貧困、麻薬対策についても (also moving concern with poverty and drug policy from sentiment to action) ?
I didn't understand the connection between them. Maybe wakaP will come up with something better ?
分かりました。朝日コムの記事の日本語がよく分からないということですね。
この文の構造は次の通りです。

[彼女は]元受刑者の社会復帰政策や貧困・麻薬対策政策について「これらの政策は〜〜〜である」と語り,支持と参加を訴えた。
(Concerning socially reformed former convicts policy and poverty and drug policies, [she] said "these policies are XXX", and appealed for support and participation.)

The meaning of the sentense was cleared up?
お互いがんばりましょうね。 🙂

I hope to work well with you. (or any number of other things depending on context).

Well, I guess that was what the article was about in the first place. Hmm, so it's only in certain situations when it is deemed inappropriate, or at least, not as appropriate as other phrases. At any rate, that was confusing, but I'm glad to have it at least cleared up a little bit. Of course I'll still have to look into this a bit further. Thanks, nhk9 and wakaP. 🙂

[She *actually* said that the XXX policies advancing Bush's faith based agenda will move sympathetic feelings into action]に近いでしょうね。

始めに「思いやりの気持ちを行動に移すものである 」と「我々は思いやり の十字軍に加わることができる」は意味がちょっと違うだから、二つも引用だということが分かりませんでした。

日本語の文章では、動詞は終わりに来るので、曖昧になりやすいですね。

And the quote below is what was actually said.....nothing whatsoever in the speech about "moving from sympathetic action into behavior." It sounds totally unnatural in point of fact.

[Although we will never be able to thank all those who wage war against despair, we are able to join them in their crusade of compassion.]

以上のような間違っていた和訳が分かろうとしたりして時間を浪費していることに
やっと気が付いたよ。:p

で、次に。。。。ある日ネクタイ売り場煮 40 代位の男性が一人、スタスタと真っすぐな一直線

買い物の場面としては速い方です。視線がショーケースの上にとり出して陳列してあった数本の

Is this last sentence roughly "His (the dansei) gaze hit and stopped on the
middle exhibit of neckties (?) that had been taken out on the top showcase?

what does ikitai yo means?
i know Ikitai means Want to go but if u add ikitai yo i think theres another meaning to it?

Sentence-ending "yo" is an emphatic. It means "Pay attention to what I just said."

oh then how do u say "I wish I could go" is it the same as Ikitai yo?

I would go with 行くといい(です)ねえ/なあ (iku to ii [desu] nee/naa).

i think 行くといい is a little strange actually. It means like "i hope i go" as if you have no control over it. If you want to go somewhere, than that implies that if you can go you will. I'd say 行けたらいいな sounds more natural. I would mean more like "I hope I can go." or "It would be great if I could go." But of you're talking about a third person, then you could say 行くといい.

もとの英文を見て驚きました。なぜあんな日本語になったのか不思議ですね。

YES, その通りです。 👍

For "I wish I could go" I would say "Ikeru dattara ii ne."

ikeru = I can go

dattara = desu + nara

desu = the verb to be

nara = if

ii = good

ne = an emphatic

~~~
It is the addition of the Japanese word "if" that changes the sentence into the subjunctive-mood sentence "could go."
Desu or Dakara only works with nouns or na adjectives, though. For verbs you'd need to conjugate out from the potential-form base. In this case "Iketara ii....." also sounds the most natural to me. 👍
という以上の部分は「客追い動作」などの問題について日本語練習エッセーからです。:D
今一つ質問がありますね。「真っすぐな一直線の動線を描いて入って来ました」は「(He entered on a straight, direct flowing line that had been drawn)と意味がしますか?:?
I think approximately ...
真っすぐな一直線の動線を描いて入って来ました
He entered, his path tracing a direct straight line.
英文を見ると,実際に線が描かれているような表現となっていますが,これは比喩ですか?
元の「真っすぐな一直線の動線を描いて」はたとえです(metaphorical expression).
動線は「人や物が移動する軌跡や方向などを示した線」なので,
traceという表現が最も適切だと思います。
同じ意味ということであれば,
He entered on the straight. ダメかな:p
Hmm, ダメだと思います。 😊
A loose translation would be "He entered, making a bee-line for the ___"
