While 「別々の道を歩きました」 makes perfect sense, 「別々の道へ進みました」would be more common and sound less like a line from a song. Unless the rest of the letter were written in that particular "style", it would sound a bit out of place.
I was thinking. This sounds like a personal letter. Should we really be taking apart every sentence trying to make it perfect? I have a feeling whoever is writing this letter knows the person receiving it. Wouldn't they find it odd when they receive a letter written in perfect Japanese from someone they know doesn't speak the language at that level? I don't know.... just a thought.
