3rd year in a row, fail. This time from domestic selection. Just got the phone call.
Congratulations those who got in.
Hello everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice from you all.
Right now I'm trying to complete the portion of the application that asks you what your present field of study is, your research theme once you arrive to Japan and the study program in Japan. I'm fine with the first two but, I'm struggling with the study program section. What exactly are they looking for? Do they want me to list the classes I want to take? Or just the thing I want to study?
Thank you for any help you can provide.
Cool - another architect! I'm also applying for the MEXT scholarship for a masters degree in architecture/urban planning at University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology with a focus on conditions of hyperdensity.Hi guys,
i could really use some help with the application!
I thought i had sussed it all out at this point, but upon reading this forum i feel like i have have misred some of the guidelines. I also am finding this difficult as our tertiary schooling system in Australia is vastly different from this. It is much more linear.
I am a graduate of Architectural Design in Sydney. I was going to apply for the Monbushu scholarship to commence my Masters Degree in Japan.
in particular, i was hoping to take advantage of some connections in the architecture department in Tokyo and specialism in Architecture and Urbanism. My goal was fairly specific, but with this new information, I need to revise my strategy, and quickly.
The feeling im getting off these forums is that you have to be sent as a research student first, and then can do your masters.
1. If that is true, do i amend my application to eventually do my masters degree and be sent as a Research Student first-
or
2. Do i amend my application to be just a Research Student?
3. And as a research student would you do completely individual research or are you taking classes?
Im finding the application very vague in terms of what is and isnt allowable, and the definitions are getting murkier and murkier to me.
Any help would be great, please let me know if you need me to expand on anything.
Cheers!
Andi

1. You do not need to be a research student first in order to get your masters. Do you speak Japanese? If not, you'll want to apply to the English programs and the application information (including contacting professors, research topics) is clearly written out on their websites. The architecture program @ Uni of Tokyo must be applied via embassy recommendation in order to get a scholarship, at Tokyo Insti Tech you can apply via either that or university recommendation, in which case the deadline isn't until November.
2. see above
3. The masters program, from what I understand, has core classes that everyone has to take and many people try to get them done in the first year in order to dedicate the second year to an independent masters thesis, which is similar to the US system and I'd imagine they have like a "thesis" course where you meet up w/ other masters students and have crits during this time. However, the Japanese masters program is also quite different then my country in that in incorporates a simultaneous internship sort of program tied in w/ prof's work (at least at TI tech)... in any case the course plans are also presented on each program's course website! I've also found that a good resource in the school blog on archinect - click on school blog project, asia, then tokyo tech.
well.... feel free to send me another question regarding the process! I'm working on my research proposal and submitting for Uni recommendation, as I was out of the country during the time of embassy interviews. Good luck!
Hey everyone!
I am originally from Serbia and I will apply for MEXT Postgraduate Scholarship next month. I am interested in International Relations program at Ritsumeikan Univeristy.
Has anyone tried to get a scholarship for international relations programs?
Me! Close to International relations though (my undergrad degree was in international relations).
