MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2009: Post Application

>>Haven09, Might as well am not really the one eligible to give you advice on your MBA , heck am going for a total different field, but I was talking about the scholarship in general.. you do have a point , I guess asking someone with a previous experience in that is the best option so far ...

>>C0okie, I envy you , I am someone who worries a lot already by nature when nothing is worth it! lol it's just who i am ! and Lucky you for such a nice professor , i hope all goes well with you! ...

>> Eucalyptus! Guess what?!! I have just received an email from Gakugei , it's incredible! is there some sort of an aura circulating this forum ??!!! :D
they told me they arranged the housing for me , and will send me all details ASAP , I was assigned to Komaba which was on my wish list to tell you the truth! I Am sooo thrilled! if you want some confirmation maybe you should contact the school you will be studying Japanese at for the first 6 months , The people from my Embassy were right after all by telling me to contact them for confirmation on my accommodation ....

Anyhow thank you all for your replies, and best of luck to all ! :D :D

I just received the the email from my uni,
told me that I will be going to Kansai International airport. Whoelse going to Kansai international Airport?
Anyone know your departure date?
I think most probably we will depart on every weekday for a week (1st, 2nd,3rd,6th, and 7th of April).

Do we have to contact our designated Universities to confirm our accommodation ? or are they supposed to contact us ? I contacted both, the language school and Tamabi but they have not replied to my emails or calls.
I feel everyone is not worried concerning that matter, prob because you all got informed some way or another? Is anyone on this forum still unaware of their assigned dorm ?? Is it ok , not to be informed up till this point about it ??

Hi, the International Student Centre arranged my dorm for me. Nothing much to do. They just send me the pictures, and details of the dorm. I don't need to fill up any forms. Just go there and check in.

Oops, just saw your post: Congrats ya!! =)

lingfan,
im not sure about the weight of the DHL package but at that time when the girl tell me about the package it seems to be a very worth for money package only for students. meaning u have to show them your student card to be eligible. try check it 0ut and let us know.. hehe thnx

Called this afternoon.
DHL costs RM 876 for 20kg.
That is eight HUNDRED and seventy six, no decimal place there!
only air freight, no surface transit. (but it reaches within a week)
So my advise - go for pos malaysia. RM 97.60
We don't have student card now, doubt they will give us student price. Even if it's 50% off, it's still Rm 400+

Btw, checked out Universal Traveller and Winter Time just this evening. They are having sale 70% off. Winter is ending soon so perhaps you can grab some light jacket just to get through spring. Luggage is also having sale right now.

skfer,
my japanese language course is 15weeks.

And those who are doing MBA, i'm super envy k!!!!
I really wished to do MBA, but because my degree is in Bioscience i wouldn't want to risk the scholarship by choosing a different discipline.
Sigh.....damn jealous. Waseda, Tsukuba MBA......

Those from Kansai region will most probably touch down on Kansai International Airport. Meaning Osaka, Kyoto , Nara etc.

ok, a lot has happened. I will try to jump in.
,
to everyone asking about accommodations,
I'm sure they are trying to find a place for you. I don't think they would just leave you stranded.

about baggage,
the baggage situation seem very inconvenient to you guys. After doing some research, and assuming that I will be taking united airlines(because its the cheapest shortest way there to osaka), they are allowing me to take 2 luggage(23kg) + 1 carry on. I'm sure I should be able to fit everything in those luggages... Oh and I still have to buy luggage, thanks for reminding me.

lingfan,
Rm876!!!?!! Did u say anything about the student price? If you didnt, i assume they gave u the normal price...maybe i will go and ask again when i am free though i dunno when..

about shipping .. I visited all shipping company in my country and I found that the lowest price at 10Kg package is FedEx about 260$ to Tokyo..
here is the most known shipping companies..
fedex.com
dhl.com
ups.com
tnt.com
aramex.com

*gasp* OMG!! r u SERIOUS?? THAT much?? and I am definitely into books!! can u imagine how much the total weight will be?? sure we can buy books there - its jz that i dun really see the point of buying the same book twice  boy, really gotta start making "Priority List" now~~ and the shopping part - the sale thats goin on now really is the rite timing, dun u think so?? 😄

silverPenciled:

u're SOOOO RIGHT about the aura!!!!!
my prof jz replied me saying one of his current student shall be in touch with me real soon - now i AM certain that someone WILL be aware if i really do get lost on my way there - MAJOR relief!! 😌

>> Skfer, you might try contacting the language school you are assigned to, they might have an idea on which dorm you will be staying at ... at least that is what happened in my case ... If I wasn't told by my Embassy to contact them then I would have probably spent the next week worrying about it .... oh and about the language course, I was told by someone who took the scholarship last year that although they tell you it 's 6 months but in real it's only for 3 , I am not sure how accurate this is though ....

>> Ooiling fan , Thanks heaps !

>> Eucalyptus
Heyyy Congrats ! I am so happy for you, certainly it's a huge relief to know that someone will be awaiting for you ... I think we're over thinking stuff ... at least I know I am ! hehe ... Things will be alright for us .... I hope!

Hey for malaysians who have done your visa i hoep u can help me answer a few questions,

Did u guys print out the form from Ms Yin email and fill it in?? How did u guys fill it? The space given to write are so small and some details i dont know what to fill in such as Port of entry into japan, name of ship , etc etc..

How long did it take to approve your visa?? Is it we just go there and hand in the form and the required documents and they wil process or they will have an interview and ask many questions? I only plan to go there wearing casual if its just handing in documents..

How was the procedure like?

Thnx dudes 🙂

Uh, I remember a Malaysian person saying that he/she got the visa in a couple of hours. I don't think you have to go through an interview... but if you are handing it to Ms. Yin, please dress nice anyways.

Ok, so I started to weigh my stuff today:
clothe = 30kg;
books = 10kg;
wheel luggage = 3~4kg each;

I was thinking of of not getting those heavy wheeled luggage, and getting large, light duffel bags instead. Then when I get to Japan, I will just use a taxi instead of carrying it to my dorm ha. saves some weight, and I also save money by not buying those wheeled luggage.

*ok bad idea, a 80km taxi is too costly.

Oh I also thought of a great idea for you desperate people out there. You could wear a bunch of clothe, eliminating it from your luggage weight. great idea right!?

>To all
I would like to apologize if I sounded harsh and might hurt the feelings of you in my previous post.

>haven09
Personally, I think it is a good chance, so don't let go of it. It is rare to get a chance like this.

>menrui
There are freight services in Japan which are very cheap, you might want to use that to transfer your things to your university from the airport. Since there might be not much of space if you are taking train or something.

>c0ok1e
I think if you can pass the guard house, then I think you will have no problems entering the visa department. I wore a polo-T, long pants and sport shoes when I collected the documents from JIS. JIS is right on top of the visa application counters.

>ooilingfan
Is Pos Malaysia ok? Will our things spoil or lost? But anyway, when it reaches Japan, it will be sent by the Japan pos service.
I would suggest buying winter clothes there. Since at the time you reach there, you will be in spring. Just bring those jackets we use in the air-conditioned room might do. That will reduce your luggage. I heard they are selling those second-hand winter wears in Japan with cheap price...
But it wouldn't be that lucky for us October batch...

>eucalyptus
Books are important, and we have the international student edition price (which should be cheaper than the original version) for our books. Not able to send those making me very sad...

Im buying winter clothes in Penang cuz my friend said its cheaper here and since she lived there for 2 yrs i choose to trust her.. I checked in shopping and mall and they have like 20 - 70% discoung total price around 100 - 150 still ok for me.

Im actually applying in PEnang consulate so i just thought of wear casual attire with t shirt and jeans.. its ok right?

:p

The process is pretty simple, so don't worry.
You just fill up the form the best you could. Bring your photograph, photocopy passport and original passport. You hand everything to Ms Yin (for mine I did it at JIS - Ms Yin's office, not the one at ground floor), if it's not complete she'll advise you accordingly.
It took me altogether 20mins. Yes, that's how efficient they are. =)
Just wear casual, as long as you don't where singlets, slippers should be fine but better wear covered shoes.

Don't send valuables then. Record down what you're shipping, just in case it gets lost, you just need to replace them. English books might be a bit hard to come by there, and shopping on Amazon.com isn't really cheap. So i'm sending those as well. Don't send too many though, you will have this headache again when you're coming back 3-6 years later =p
and that time it's chargable at japan's postal rate!

I've decided to get my winter clothings there, it's so damn bulky.
Just bringing enough that i won't freeze for the 1st few days. Menrui! lucky you! I read that travellers from U.S. always have MORE luggage allowance, how unfair, 2 check in luggages, 23-30 kg each.

>c0ok1e
Where to shop in Penang? Gurney Plaza or Queensbay Mall? I am in vicinity to Penang too, I am in the Peninsular.

>ooilingfan
Do you think we can ask Ms Yin to help us get a discount rate for our extra luggages when she books our air tickets?

The parcel fees from Japan would be cheaper, in relative to their living cost, although it is a few Ringgit more sending from there.

U from penang too? then we can meet up b4 go to japan hehe.. Im from the island..

I only went to Queensbay mall and look at 1 shop.. the price is less than rm 200 so think gonna get it here to reduce the hasle of going japan and hunting for winter clothing.. somemore cant speak japanese well.. but first maybe shud ask someone who is already in japan and how much the winter clothing costs.. if the price difference is not much then get from penang.. hehe

kouki,
freight service! I will look that up. Thanks

cookie,
no way~ a pair of shoes weighs about 1kg. Your wardrobe of clothe only weighs 1kg? Are you a nudist or something? By the way, I was talking about ALL of my clothe together(including winter wear and shoes) weigh 30kg.

ooilingfan,
yeah, we do it big in america. and if we dont get what we want, we complain, ha. maybe we have to pay more too, im not sure.

>> cOok1e
The space in the form is just good enough for me to fill in though :p
Probable date of entry,Port of entry, name of ship: you may leave them blank.
Address of hotel: your dorm perhaps
Guarantor in Japan : your professor @ university.
Japan consulate in Penang opens from 0830-1200, 1400-1600. The application procedure is rather simple. Just give your IC to the guard at the counter, proceed to 28th floor, take a number from guard and then submit the whole set of your documents. No interview. You may ask them to refer Mr. Fukabori, the one signing the official letter of ours, just in case. They will keep your passport and the original copy of the official letter. If everything goes smoothly, you may leave and wait for 2 days i suppose for you to get your visa done. I'm going to get mine today later right after 2 pm.. Hehe..
T-shirt and jeans would be fine.

menrui.
a pair of shoe weigh 1kg?? i never weigh them before LoL..

But 30 kg sounds kinda heavy and everytime i go for trip my bag doesnt feel heavy to me.. maybe i shud try and weigh them... mayb winter wear is the heavy 1.. :-)

One question menrui, Malaysia is a tropical country so i never experience winter b4 hence 0 knowledge on winter wear and essentials items to use during winter season.. and since im going to hokkaido , can u tell me the essential items that i need to buy for winter such as lip balm, etc etc and the components of winter clothing?? Im sure winter clothing is not just one jacket but glove, cap, etc etc..

thnx

I dont know the address of my dorm.. Will they allow me to apply if i leave them blank??

Also after the age, month, year then they have a small space for province, country , city or something like that.. u manage to fill in the province withthe 2 cm line?? did u write the words top them bottom or just one straight line??
cuz Tanjong bungah seems to be longer than 2 cm for my handwriting

The link for the freight service is here
Takuhaibin Delivery Services
Well, the price for one luggage is even more than getting me from Tokyo to Tsukuba (around 1000yen).

>haven09
It is known as MBA & MPP under the Graduate School of System and Information Engineering. I think someone else in Malaysia will go under that course as well.

>dumex
I thought only 20 minutes is needed to get the visa done, as told by ooilingfan in his experience? It takes days in Penang... Then I must so do that in the embassy...

cookie,
I usually pack lightly for a "trip" too. But this isn't really a trip right? Um, I live in the southern part of the US... our winters aren't too cold, and we get snow once every 10 years. So I can't tell you any more than you already know.

kouki,
thanks for the link! I was just looking it up.

If I don't use that delivery service, I will be carrying(rolling) 3 big luggages to the dorm house...

>haven09

Nope... I will be in a different department from you. I am in the Department of Intelligent Interactive Technologies.:-)
