MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)


That's because i don't have a Japanese Medical Doctor's License, that's why i would be doing research first, i guess my question is: can i enter an already ongoing research and enter the team through the MEXT scholarship or the only choice is for me to be the one proposing the research and see which university is interested in it?

It seems, we are in the same boat here. Do you, guys, write emails to your prospective proffesors in English? If it is so, what's your Japanese language ability? As far as i understrand Japanese language skills are essential for the most part of programmes (except economy, and other global stuff). What do you think?
 
As I'm not proficient in Japanese (I just got my N5 certificate and will be working in obtaining N4 this year) I am looking for proffesors who speak English to start my research. There are many people who have obtained the scholarship and didn't even know how to say "hello" in Japanese
 
Hi all! How is everyone's application coming along?

I wondered if the application is officially open yet in some countries like US, Canada and other European countries? I browsed around and it looked as if they haven't gotten around to update the application materials yet.

Also, does anyone know if it is University holiday this week? Given that it is the week before the new semester month?

Embassy of Japan in Malaysia deadline to submit the MEXT 2016 application is today and tentatively the English & Japaneses Language examination will be held on 24 May 2015 and followed by interview session between 8 - 12 June 2015.

I think most Professors are busy this week because it is graduation week in Japan and the preparation for April 2015 admission.

The process in Malaysia seems to be different than many other countries. The process is even longer! Have you applied this year?
 
Malaysia is very early! The Canadian sites (one for each of the large cities with Japanese diplomatic representation) have not yet been updated for this year.
 
Yeah, Malaysia is way early. In Mexico the process will not start until the end of April.

I am looking at April myself, would really like to study Japanese for 6 months!

Looking at schools in the Kansai region, though the schools in Tokyo are always nice, as is the city. What about you guys?
 
Hi... last year i have been in Japan for international students exchange program... so with that experience i planned to apply for MEXT scholarship. but now i am currently working with defence university as a lecturer ( i am civilian).. there are lots of civilians students study with this university.. so, am i eligible to apply to this scholarship? anyone if you know please reply.... i am totally confused..

I am from India and really new to applying for Japan. I am planning my research study (PhD) in Japan.
Is it mandatory to take the Japanese Test? I am applying to a couple of research groups, one in the university of Tokyo and I don't think that the medium of instruction would be Japanese. Please help me. Anyone familiar with the test in Indian Embassy, can you advise me?

I am applying for MEXT 2016, was reading MEXT related post all afternoon yesterday. Really nice info thanks, I decided to create an account.
I have some concerns…
In my country, embassy says that we should not contact professor during our screening. But we have to fill application documents putting our universities/graduate school /department and professor/advisor. So… we are supposed to simply put a professor without he/she even knowing about us?!

These are my accomplishment (in order) that I can actually put on the application form. Do you think they consider these as important things?
  1. I got my degree with highest distinction.
  2. I have JLPT N3 (I am probably N2 now, I will take exam this year but even if I pass will not be able to put it on my application)
  3. I was in Osaka (and all over Kansai region) for a Japan Foundation scholarship.
  4. I pass my basic Chinese exam HSK
  5. My TOEFL is 105 from this year.
PS: Sorry if I write something wrong I wrote this fast.

New member from Malaysia here.
I'm applying for a research student programme (hoping to further my master's degree). Anyway,
1) Is there anyone here who applied (or planning to apply) for linguistics and/or Waseda University?
2) And for my fellow Malaysians, do you guys know when and how will they notify those who passed the document screening to attend the written examination?
 

I meet a chinese guy that enter Waseda with linguistic related research for master degree. If you want to go into Japanese linguistic or comparative linguistics (Japanese compared with something else) you need high level Japanese. This guy was N1 in JLPT so they let him in.


I have another open question, to anyone who may know:
Do you think that select Tokyo University, Kyoto University and/or Osaka University as options may be detrimental to your application considering all of them are the most selective universities?

But I may opt to English-taught master's program in linguistics which are offered by Waseda (Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies) or Tohoku (International Graduate Program in Language Sciences).

By the way, regarding your question, it's really hard to say. Based on what I've read from the previous applicants' experience, it totally depends on your academic merit and luck. Since those universities are crème de la crème, they usually receive tons of applications every year. But if you are confident with yourself and your academic accomplishment, just give it a go. Besides, no one really knows what's the ideal criteria of selection for those universities anyway.

Hello everyone! I just registered to drop into this thread and greet everyone. I'm a professional interactive and graphic designer working in Texas and I'm also applying for a scholarship for 2016. I'm interested in studying art/design at a graduate level, which narrows my university options considerably, so I'm interested to see how far I get in this process. I'm nervous because most applicants seem to be heavily focused in other areas like science and engineering, but I figured I might as well give it a try!

I've been reading this forum all day gathering intel and I'm excited to join you all. よろしくお願いします!
 

The embassy will notify through email to those who passed the document screening to attend the written exam on 24 May 2015. The email should arrive more or less two weeks before 24 May 2015.
 
Anyone from Malaysia apply for PhD program? I saw most of you apply for Master program.
Btw, is the chance of getting the scholarship for PhD larger or smaller than Master?
 
Are there any Americans around who are applying in the next month or two? I have a really, really obvious question I need answered. I emailed the consulate to ask and the person who replied told me to apply for the JET Programme (ahaha, what?!) and didn't answer my actual question:

Are there any particular rules we need to follow for mailing in the application? I can't find any information about who to address the envelope to or if I need to include a cover letter. My big fear is that I'll mail in the big envelope of materials and it'll wind up in the trash because no one knows where it's supposed to go.

Does anyone know any details about this? Sorry if it's a dumb question.
 

Thought I don't have an answer for your specific question I wanted to reply to you in regards to something else - I wanted to ask you about your deadlines and forms? Has your consulate provided them? Here in Canada we don't have any information about 2016 yet - the consulate websites all have the 2015 info left up.

When is your deadline?

RE: your question, I would simply call the consulate. The people there seem to be working JET and MEXT together, with the same staff members (at least that is how it seems in Vancouver and Montreal) so maybe they got their wires crossed. I would call them and double check.

It varies from consulate to consulate from what I understand, but my application materials are all due June 17th. The interview/exam happens on July 8th. They only announced these dates in the last week or two, so yours will probably be up soon. The materials are all up, too, and updated for the 2016 scholarship. Yeah, I'll have to give them a call probably. I think maybe a lot of people hand in their materials in-person, so it's not much of an issue... But I'm 4ish hours away and I'd rather mail everything in. I'll update if I get more info.
