MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Here in New Zealand we're supposed to be getting the notice in "late July", hopefully they're not planning on doing it on the very last day...

That was the word here iin Canada too and then they surprised us with one of the earliest reports I've ever heard of!

I'm thankful.

Consulate here in Los Angeles told us that we'll be hearing from them by "early july to mid-july" and this was back in late June. I'm waiting since then. I hope I didn't fail

Just wondering, It is ok if we send our documents to more than 1 universities and get LOA from more than 1? Or do we have to stick to one?

There's a reason why the Placement Form has 3 spots AFAIK. It's for your main and backups - unless your chosen university has a "us and nobody else" rule. If not, you're supposed to get LOAs for as many of the three as possible and then MEXT will play Russian Roulette as of where to place you.... or decide according to their budget of the year, though I'm positive they just pull a number out of a box randomly for placement.

I'm more concerned with what happens when/if we don't get LOAs from ALL three. My first two choices are quite solid as far as the LOA is concerned IMHO (or at least I hope so), it's the last one I'm not quite sure of.

But really, I'm getting wayyyyy ahead of myself here. Until I get any embassy news regarding the screening, the above really doesn't matter much.

*running out of popcorn boxes to munch on*

Hey! Thanks for replying~
IKR?! They tell us there are 3 slots but idk its sort of scary lol
I dont even think i will list 3.. also how do we know that the uni had 'nobody but us policy?' Lol xD
WHY SO LESS INFO! NEED MORE INFOOO!!!
Even i'm getting ahead of myself as i said, no contact from the embassy yet, but I have too much free time ~
*gives you more popcorn*

It is true. Malaysians have not receive any news of the outcome of the interview. I asked the Embassy through email and they replied the outcome will be notified to all applicants through email and post by end of July. I just hope it is not 31 July but perhaps more earlier.

Thanks for the follow up ajeng. I wanted to ask the Embassy folks, but I was unsure if it was prudent... it being the Eid holidays and all, so I decided to just wait it out.

So yeah... end of July. And we need LOAs by the end of August...

... I need more popcorn.

well I had my exam yesterday and the interview today
not so sure about the interview, but I will hope for the best * I feel it was too short.. or maybe I was too nervous and waiting outside seem eternal *

can you still apply for university recommendation in any case? haha just looking at my options by any case ;;;;

Yes , I think you can still apply for university recommendation, if you have a professor who is willing to recommend you! It starts in October (i think , not sure ! )

Isn't it that you are not allowed to contact an university anymore after end of August? Meaning that you have to send your documents before that time? That's on the information sheet of The Netherlands, and you have to send the LoA you have received from the university to your embassy before end of September.

Exactly. Getting information about first screening by early August with replies required by the end of that month doesn't really give much time to contact anyone for anything, right?

That said, I have read (somewhere) that the August "deadline" is actually the deadline for us to send docs to Universities - replies from the Unis might come afterwards, maybe even in Sept.

However, supposedly end of August is holiday season (or something) for Japanese Universities (not sure though, need to check with @TranSenz about that). If we don't get our docs in quick enough, your selected Professor might not be around to sign your LOA (which they have to do).

AFAIK anyway.

hi all friends,

I wanted to write about my interview, but I delayed it until the final result which came today. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed.

I am really frustrated, never felt like this at all in my life, although I prepared a unique research proposal but I feel like the interviewers didn't really read it thoroughly... They asked stuff that anyone who did not read it will ask. One of them (The Jordanian, the other 2 are Japanese) asked me how will I do my research in Japan... I answered him but he said that what I said is "in general" and he wanted to hear about my actual research... that surprised me because I was not talking about anything but my research.

I have a feeling that this caused my failure.

Do you know any other scholarship? I can not wait until the next year!

Yesterday I read through the entire thread from last year - still can't figure out schools that have the "us an nobody else" rule. I am currently going beyond my top 2 schools, submitting to about 4 others' international departments along with direct mail to potential supervisors. At this point, some of our overlap in fields is pretty spotty and I'm basically looking at long shots. Also, throughout my proposal (a copy of the original is what we must send when getting LoAs, meaning they are the ones from late-spring, stamped by the embassy, unedtted since late-spring) mentions my top choice university and the professor there who has helped me since last fall and has verbally committed to be my supervisor - I don't think that portion of it is very convincing to the 4 other schools and profs I am emailing it to now.

We'll see what I can string together for my 3rd choice.

I just got notified that I didn't pass the interview
oh well I will keep reading for everyone else's progress

Anyone got any kind of advice on how to contact the professors at the university? ive been trying to contact some of them with the email in the university website but ive got no response from any of them, its been 2 months or so now

that's weird maybe the emails on the website are outdated? I would say contact the department office for the professor's emails in that case

Actually i did, they sent the email for me to the department office like "formally" from the department, still no response ( its been like 2 weeks )

Its the holiday season now in Japan i think. Festivals and all are going on! If u dont get a reply, mail once again, and then try calling them!! Best luck!

No official confirmation from the embassy in India looks like they will contact us on 31st july itself xD

@Search , have you tried contacting the professors themselves?
Try to search the university website, there might be some guidelines regarding MEXT scholarship and how to get the LoA?

How does one apply for a LoA from Waseda? It says here that they want all your documents, as well as a placement preference form.

I haven't provided my placement preference form to the embassy yet, and don't know if I will rank Waseda as my top choice when I do - however, when I submit to waseda for initial consideration, I think I should put their school and the potential adviser's name at the top... don't you?

Will this cause issue later when the Embassy gets my finalized form (and the letters of acceptance I was able to gather)?

Err... I'm not sure. I personally don't have that problem coz our embassy requires the placement form to be filled outright (prior to the interview).

I even went and took IELTS because the universities I was applying to required English level certification for non-native speakers... and I wanted the embassy to certify copies of that cert as well.

So yeah. IINM this is how it's "supposed" to be (in regards to the placement form), so I'm not quite sure about your circumstances. Maybe check with your embassy?

Not that it matters on my end as long as our local embassy decides to continue playing "let's wait until our candidates get heart attacks from the anxiety" as they are doing right now.

Or diabetes. From all the popcorn.

*cries in a corner*

Hi, Yes i sent emails to the departments and the professors, i was wondering if they were having vacations or something but the general department was working normally and actually they answered me the same day, probably they dont need anyone in their department and they just dont bother answering me? The general department told me to wait 2 weeks at most with every proffesor and that they are really really busy these days.. hopefully thats it.. btw the university is kyoto and the department is medicine.
