MEXT Scholarship 2014

I got called for the interview! I've no idea why, I was pretty sure I flunked the Japanese exam =/.
 
Hi. I applied for the MEXT scholarship for postgraduate studies this year (2013). Any fellow countrymen out here?

The kind of questions asked in the interview has been well documented. For instance here and here.

What I'm asking for now is the answers to this questions.

Of course each person will have its own, but reading other people's thoughts might provide some helpful insight into one's own reasons and it will probably help put into words what we think. Not only that, we might find in others' answers, some new reasons for us to want to go to Japan.

From the aforementioned links I copied the questions below. If you feel like there are some important questions missing, please tell me and I'll add'em to the list. Provide answers to which ever ones you like.

1. Why Japan?

2. What's your biggest motivation?

3. What do you want to do after the scholarship?

4. What in the japanese culture interests you?

5. How did Japan come into your life in the first place?

6. How well can you live on your own?

7. Can you wash your own clothes?

8. What preparations have you made for the scholarship?

There's also the 'survival skills' questions, like "How well can you live on your own?", "Can you wash your own clothes?", "What preparations have you made for the scholarship?".

There's also field-specific questions like "What's your favourite manga?", "Who's your favourite mangaka, and why?", "Do you know any universities in Japan that deal with manga?", "What values do you intend to impart to your readers in your manga?" (the field of study I chose was manga/anime/illustration, so I got questions like these).

I added a few questions. The ones related to manga seem highly depedent on the applicant, so I decided not to add'em.

I can't understand what they mean with preparations for the scholarship. Can you please clarify?
 
HI guys, this forum has been extremely helpful. Yet another person from the Caribbean (Grenada). I have my exam and interview on the same day (Tuesday 23rd). I'm so nervous especially for the Japanese exam since I'm just a beginner in Kanji. My listening and speaking skills are intermediate but I'm just about JLPT level 5.

I realised many people have their exams and interviews on different days. If I have mine on the same day does that mean I'll have to take a second interview after?

hi there , i also applied for the scholarship this year but didn't receive anything from the embassy .. probably i didn't get accepted
what about you ?
 
By preparations, they mean to ask if you've prepared yourself for the whole 'living alone and studying in a foreign country' deal - if you've learned even just a bit of the language, if you've acquired a taste for the food, among others.

I put in the manga questions to bring home the point that your embassy officials can and will ask field-specific questions.
 
Hi lasershark, did you already get a call? :? I think today marks that one month after the interview. My friend is already worried.

Hi,

I didn't receive anything from the embassy but today I phoned the embassy and they told me that the results will be in the end of July

Nope, not yet. I heard from someone that the last day for them to call applicants will be around the end of this month, though.
 

Hello there.....
Nice to another person from the region interested in this prestigious scholarship....I hope your endeavors are successful so that we may embrace Japan away from home. Correct me if I've mistaken but from your post, I take it that you're a research student so YES.....You will be doing exams and a short interview on the day.....Further more, you will have to wait on a phone call from the embassy to notify if you've been shortlisted for a second interview at the embassy in your country....I'm an undergrad student but I've seen some of the steps a research student have taken.

I have done the complicated exams for undergrad student and have been utterly defeated and disgraced....but regardless I have been notified to come in for an interview....32 did the exam...but only 6 got interviewed.....this scholarship is a tough cookie to bite. I did my exams on July 8, 2013 and my interview was scheduled on July 12, 2013....The interview was surprisingly FUN....I did that in caps to emphasize that there is nothing to worry about.... in my country, I was calm and approached the interviewers as I would to any other persons... Just knowing that the interviewers are just as nervous as I am made me calm...I implore that you guys be as polite as possible without looking creepy and answer your questions with confidence and eloquence with a hint of smiles....Be prepared...have your pen to write down questions or if you're like me...take mental notes and ask at least one question before you leave that room. I have yet to receive another call to notify me if I have been shortlisted once more but it's all good, called embassy and they are not updated with the list as yet so my fingers are still crossed and I'm doing my little Japanese language studies so that if I'm selected then I can spend most of my time exploring Japan rather than struggling to learn Japanese.....Wish you guys all the best...
 
Yeah, the people from the interview were really nice. Didn't ask any questions that were listed on the forum, though, and I was so nervous I was not very coherent (not that I'm all that coherent in spoken Japanese to begin with). I was also taken aback by how professional and well prepared some of the other contestants were. Ah well, I'll try again next year.
 
A friend of mine got rejected today, in the pre-interview screening.

Edit: Got rejected too. What the ****?

People who got accepted to postgraduate degrees, do you mind telling me (us) your average grades in percentage?
 
How long do you wait for a letter of acceptance? It quite approaches the deadline. I'm really worried. :?
 
I got 95%+ in English(not sure about 2 questions), and I'm not sure about the Japanese part but I think I got around 200/300 points at least (no answers so I don't know my percentages right)
 

Just got the embassy recommendation e-mail today!
Final screening awaits!

Hello there! I'm new here. But anyway, I also just got an email today saying I got the Embassy recommendation (I'm a Special Training Scholarship applicant). I'm just curious, because I've read in some other forums before (after receiving this notification) that there seems to be another medical examination in which the results must be submitted to the Embassy before their given deadline. Were there any other documents attached on the email you received or just the letter alone? 'Cause I only got the letter.

Oh, and congratulations to us! Hoping we'd also get MEXT's approval

Magician, I'm not quite sure since I believe the certificate of primary selection is for postgrad applicants (I'm taking the undergraduate but correct me if I'm wrong)

alyssarashi, I didn't get anything else as well. I thought the medical stuff came after the MEXT notification and not the embassy notification?
