Joujou85, maximum number of LoAs we can submit to the embassy is 3.
When we first arrive in Japan, we will be enrolled as research students (6 months).
It is after passing the entrance examination for the university that we will be enrolled as a Masters student.

Charchoal, there's nothing much we all can do from here except to wait for their response. Previous years, there was an option in the application form for us to agree with MEXT's allocation if we cannot get the university of our choice, but it looks like that option has been taken off so we can't say much on whether we will be disqualified.
I am not sure if it is a good idea to call the professors directly. It would be better to contact the faculty office instead to inquire, but if the universities you are applying for are national universities, do be prepared to speak in Japanese as most of the staff are not proficient in English at all. (Even if they can speak English, I think we can barely understand them over the phone due to their heavy Japanese accent

No need to worry Joujou, your Research scholar term is full 2 years, in which you have to pass the university entrance exam to get enrolled as a Masters student, which you can do in 6 months or 1 year. If you are successful in getting in a Masters course your scholarship will automatically extend, but you have to do the necessary paper work for that, that's what my seniors have told me.

No u did nothing wrong, even I have done the same mistake. I chose Doctral degree course and until the completion of doctral degree. and Chose my first course to be done as doctors. And half of the professors whom I sent mail said that I cant enter a doctors course directly as the entrance exam is held in feb or april etc etc. And every time I have to explain them that I want to come first as a research student and then after passing the entrance exam want to move to next course. I made this mistake as one of the embassy officials here told me to chose the option up to which you want to study in Japan. So you just need to state clearly that you will be coming as Research scholar and then move to Masters. As some of the Profs in japan are not fully aware of the MEXT scholarship process, they required to be explained what we want to do.

someone has asked about will happen if we fail to get a LOA ..... i don want to disappoint you but the education officer of Japan Embassy here warned me while giving me the papers that the rule has been tough this year and the scholarship will directly be canceled if i fail to get a LOA, which was not same in other years.....
Its scary because i could not manage one yet and my deadline for submitting the form with 3 professor name is 15th of this month!!!!
Anyway i am calm and atleast feel good when read this forum....

I heard from sempais that as a research student, they were all so busy trying to study for the actual master program entrance exam that they didn't focus on their research for the "research program."
Are you guys doing your program in Japanese or English?
I have the impression that it's particularly hard if you attempt to enter a Japanese program. A sensei from my Uni apparently, she went to Japan for Ph.D in languages, and after 2 years of research student status, she couldn't enter a Ph.D program.
But that was years ago, I don't think they offered much English programs.
So while we have time here in our countries, around 8 months or more, let's all be productive!

Oh, this is really scary, I have not heard any thing like this happening in past. One of my friends was in reserve list a few years back and in october the embassy contacted him asking his willingness to go to Japan, he agreed and MEXT literally arranged a professor for him. but this year this seems to be tough.

Yah we should be productive in the remaining months till we land in Japan. One prof from Tsukuba univ has given me a cautious advice that entering Masters or PhD program is very difficult and MEXT scholarship students are not given any special favor. So we should utilize our time here judiciously and productively.

about my nickname... Yes I chose it last year when I joined this forum and while I was waiting for the final word by MEXT, which is usually in December. So, believe me, getting LoAs is easy compared to waiting 4 months and clicking every second to refresh inbox, and running to answer the call when phone rang. And then they said: NO!
But that tought me to be calm and just hope for the best, cause after this point where we did our best at the moment (first screening and Loas), there is nothing more we can do...

I'm a beginner in this forum and I will be taking the test this Friday but I have some question regarding the MEXT test question.
I wanna ask if the Japanese test, which is after the first round screening, be the same format like last year, which is comprehension type and close passage or will it be like the previous few years, which has more vocabulary and grammar.
Please notify me if this is not supposed to be asked, and thanks in advance.
The Japanese test is not like last year, its like the tests conducted in year 2007 or prior. It has 3 sets and of 2 hours. Gambatte kudasai

There are 3 sets (a, b and c). of different level from basic to advance. ranging from JLPT level 5 to Level 1. you have to attempt all three.
Feeling a little relieved now as I have received news today that my LoAs are on the way ^^ good luck to everyone else with their LoAs!! I hope we all get to meet up in Japan next year!

They were very polite and said that they are terribly sorry to inform me that I didn't get the scholarship due to the sudden budget cut and that they would be more than happy if I apply next year. That was really honest from their side as they really couldn't do anything, but technically it was kind of "No", right?
usually all nominated applicants get the final YES in December but there is always that small possibility that things will go wrong
I have just received my LoA through normal airmail, so the waiting time begins...

That's really devastating! After all the trouble you went through and you got a NO as their final verdict! How many applicants were nominated during your year? Good luck to you though, praying that everything will turn out right for you this year

usually 4-5 people from Serbia are nominated each year. The year before 5 people got the scholarship, but I don't know for last year, I guess 3 or something like that. But, believe me, you shouldn't think about what are the odds for success. Its not just a phrase when you say: just do your best.
do not bother with statistics, just have in mind that this is not a definite decision when you say to your friends and family that you will go to Japan next year.
Everybody I meet says like: "aren't you in Japan yet?" Then I have to explain over and over how: "I should have been, but..."
That's when you believe in statistics. This year unless I see a plane ticket I don't believe I am going
If you really want this you will improve yourself year after year and they will notice that. Getting this scholarship from the first attempt needs a lot of good luck, and failing from the third time needs a lot of bed luck... Luck is generally a big factor, as I see it

I totally agree with you. I still tell my friends and family that it isn't a confirmed thing until I receive the final approval from MEXT next year. But I guess I should upgrade my statement to be like yours, 'no plane ticket, no belief that I'm going Japan'
Just to release some tension a little, where are you planning to go?

Yah I also totally agree with you luck plays a big factor. and I also have told my family this time that I will go only when I get a final confirmation for MEXT. This was not the case when I was nominated for junior scholarship a few years back, and everybody including me was celebrating and finally the news came that I was not going. and my dreams shattered, it took over 6 months to get out of that shock. hope I have enough of good luck this time.
