I have a question.. Are you able to apply for the MEXT undergraduate scholarship through university recommendation? I know that you can do this for the research scholarship and Post graduate scholarship but can you do this for the undergraduate:?

Hi Karinkitoka, I am also majoring in International Relations! Have you decided on a topic yet? I don't know if they're keen on people with IR backgrounds, since I'm seeing mostly engineering, science and computer science students around. The fact that I am also not fluent in Japanese will be a disadvantage. But oh well it doesn't hurt to try! I haven't exactly decided which school I want to apply to but I'm looking around!

well about the topic, i've decided but the methodology is much harder than the topic,i'm confused a little bit:?
i'm not fluent in japanese too,in fact ,i have no knowledge of japanese at all,since we're going to take 6 months of japanese lessons,i don't think it's a serious problem
well,what i have noticed in japanese univesrsities is that ir is under law departement,only some universities which provide an ir departement such as:chubu university,or shizuoka university

i think you should contact the japanese embassy in rome,because in my country the undergraduate scholarship is through the embassy recommendation because you will pass a test,i think in maths and english

No. You can't. There's information about different ways of applying for MEXT on the website studyinjapan.go.jp, and undergrads must apply through embassy recommendation.

and i'm hoping to do major in Civil Engineering.I will have to take Physics, Chemistry, Math and English.I printed the tests from past years and they dont look so rough,but a good prepare is a must.

Any sempai or any peer can tell me the difference btw the two economics and business management in Japanese universities as well as which three suitable universities in these fields?

Hello everyone. I'm new here... I kind of registered a couple of weeks ago but didn't have the chance to post until now.. in any case.

I'm planning to apply for either Marketing or International Business... probably the second.

@iWENTtoJAPAN: I called the embassy here in Mexico and got an appointment for April 27th (there's nothing on the website yet), maybe you should call too and ask, since it seems some embassies simply don't update their websites often.

Hi, I'm from Indonesia and would like to apply for the monbukagakusho scholarship this year. this year I plan to apply for the research student program.
in the application form, 12th question we are asked what is the first course that we plan to take.
there are 4 choices
1. research student
2. master course
3. doctoral course
4. professional graduate course

I am just curious. for this question, does choosing 1.research student will give better odd to be accepted compare to choose 2.master degree?

I am willing to choose 1.research student if it has better odd to be accepted.

Im not seeing that much of a difference in terms of monthly allowance, however research student will not make the grantee get a master degree am i right? on the other side research student will not cost that much compare to master degree (in terms of educational fee).

From logical terms isnt master degree is more appealing to you guys? you can finish your research and getting your degree. while research student will only finish your research but not getting a degree.

I am also aware that student who take research student have option to continue his/her study so that he/she able to obtain a master degree. are there any chance where you dont accepted to obtain master degree? what are the steps? (despite need to be accepted in Japan university first)

For Master Course, you will need to take an entrance exam of the university in Japan (which will be painful given that you're not residing in Japan and the exam will require some preparations). People often study as a research student for 6 months before taking this entrance exam so that they can study Japanese and prepare for the exams.

So if you're not fluent in Japanese and not confident or do not have financial basis to go to Japan just to take an entrance exam, you should go for the research course. That's why most people pick that option!

Btw, you are allowed to remain as a research student for at most 2 years, and if you can't gain entrance to a Master's degree course, you'll have to return to your home country. I've never heard of the second case however

Anyway, are there any other possibilities (other than my example above) that university does not accept research student? research student system is like internship right? you are not officially enrolled yet you contribute some of your work.

because based on my experience and lots of my friends' experience tht already accepted in Japan,
if the professor say yes, so the university will accept you. It s like almost absolutely, the university will accept you.
for extreme case, I have no research proposal, have different research topic background with my (future) professor, yet the professor still wants me to be his student, and now im holding a letter of acceptance of TokyoTech.

It s like, good and bad thing at a same time,
find a suitable professor is the key. Once you can impress him, then tht s all you need to get accepted in his lab as well as in his university.

didnt disagree means you re agree rite?

there re so many reasons for a professor to reject an applicant...the simplest one is, he doesnt need student because his lab is full, no matter how good the applicant is.
well, im not sure tht my experience is applicable to all of us, since people are different one to another,
the only thing I emphasized when the professor interviewed me was...i know Japan, i have lived in Japan, I worked with Japanese professor before in a research project, and I love Japan, like daisuki! I...and im willing to work hard. When the professor ask me about my research plan, I said, well, I have a plan in my mind, but you will change it anyway, right? That s what I learnt from my previous professor, student' research should be correlated with professor research, and they usually have a big project and the professor will give part of it to me. Then, the professor laughed and said "...indeed, indeed".
