hi, i am thinking of applying for this scholarship next year, but i have a question.. they say that ,,Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in faculties or schools which major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when they come to Japan and must be enrolled in the home institution at the time when they return to their home countries.,, does that mean that i have to be enrolled at my uni. the whole year, even though i dont want to take any courses at my home uni. or ask for course recognition at my home uni..? is it not posible to interrupt one's studies at home uni?

I'm studying English-Japanese Translation Studies in Chile. Here, only my university can apply for Japanese Studies scholarship, therefore, this year only 7 people took the exam and 5 passed (I'm not sure, maybe the 7 passed) the 1st screen, but last year 11 people took the exam and only 2 passed the 1st screen and got the scholarship. Previously, those who had passed the 1st screen was 99% sure they would get the scholarship. I'm expecting the results, my level of Japanese isn't the best, but I only want to improve my Japanese level. *^*
I applied for Osaka Daigaku, Doushisha Daigaku, and Ritsumeikan Daigaku.

I'm French and I applied almost for every uni you chose, except I chose Hiroshima Daigaku instead of Doshisha. Here in France we were supposed to get the results for the 2nd screening during the 1st week of June, but we are still waiting for them. Do you know if we will get the results by e-mail or by letter? In France we had to send an envelope with our adress written on it with our application file, I don't know if it's supposed to be used for the 2nd screening or later...

Here, I directly delivered the documents in Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile and I was contacted via e-mail by the Japan Embassy for the test, interview, and 1st screen notification. Last month, I wrote to the Embassy and they repplied me that they didn't have any information. If they have any information, immediately I will be contacted. So, I think we will get the results by e-mail, and maybe telephone¿? because "it's faster", I guess. Also, I asked my friends, who are in Japan now, and got the notification by e-mail in mid-June last year.
In addition, many people who got the scholarship in my country, they didn't get the university they had chosen. I'm very nervous ~ haha <3

Okay ! Yes I guess it's faster by e-mail. I don't know if we will get the results by phone... I know it has been the case for some countries but in France there were a lot of applicants (74 took the exam and something like 15 people nailed the first screening) I guess calling a dozen of people would be quite long, then I guess we will get the information by mail then.
Yes the majority of the people I know who are in Japan right now thanks to MEXT didn't get the uni they wanted. It seems like it depends on your country, if you don't get one of your choice. The belgian I know have been sent to Ibaraki , in the north, the slav people I know have been sent to Utsunomiya near Nikkô in the north, too. The vietnamian have been sent to Mie in the south, the French people in Toyama... I don't know if this is just a coincidence... Where are the people you know who didn't get the uni they was expecting? (and what are their nationality, just to know?

They are Chileans. One person is studying in Osaka Kyoiku daigaku, and the other person is studying in Hosei daigaku.
Today, my embassy sent me my result. Unfortunately, my application has not been accepted. u.u
Next year, I think I will apply again.

tsumi, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get accepted this year. I hope you'll make it next year then!
I'm sorry I still haven't answered the questions about living in Kyoto and Nagasaki and so on. I don't have enough time to do that right now either, but I will try to get back to it soon. I was so busy with school and work the whole spring and also actively trying to forget I even applied for this scholarship so I wouldn't be too disappointed if failed to get accepted.
I think I didn't tell you earlier, but I am maybe a bit older than exchange students usually are (28) and have been studying for quite many years already. Also, in my official papers it is written that my right to study ends in July 2017 (which is not actually true but I can't really prove it yet) so at first I thought I wasn't even eligible to apply! But my friend told me to try nevertheless and so I tried to explain my situation to the embassy as well as I could. Luckily they understood and let me pass the first screening. But still I was afraid that I would be refused at the second screening based on those official papers stating that I would graduate during the exchange (which is not permitted, right?).
Anyway, I got email from the embassy on Monday telling that I passed the second screening and now the Ministry is negotiating with the three universities I had chosen in my application. Also, they said that if none of those three universities accepts me, I won't get the scholarship at all. I remember choosing the option that I am happy with any other university too, so getting an email like that made me panic quite a bit. I asked them if I had accidentally chosen the wrong option, but they told me that's not the case and that yes, the Ministry might try to find me another university if all my chosen ones decline me. So now I'm really confused! I somehow thought that after passing the second screening it would be quite sure that I would go at least _somewhere_, just maybe not to a uni I had hoped to attend. I guess I misunderstood it then.
So, I'm having very mixed feelings right now and I'm too afraid to be happy about going to Japan as it's still not confirmed. I really really want to go! They told me I should know by the beginning of August.

Oh and some of my Finnish friends who got the scholarship in the previous years got their first or second choice, but some didn't. My friends have studied for example at Osaka daigaku, Hiroshima daigaku, Yamagata daigaku and Daito Bunka daigaku, so it seems there isn't any specific pattern here. Though I know a few people who went to Yamagata, but I think they all chose it themselves.

Mangojam: I'm "bit old" (26) too! but it doesn't matter. My friend who got scholarship last year is 30 years old and he has had any problem in Japan =) .
I think you already got the tickets to Japan, relax!.
I will continue on trying! There are other chances to go Japan.
My plan is I will not give up :3
However, next year is my 3rd and final opportunity for Japanese Studies scholarship, because I will graduate in December.

My application got rejected by the Ministry. It's a bit hard because in France, it has been 5 years that nobody was rejected for the 2nd screening, apparently, I'm the first one in 5 years who has been rejected, it's a bit shameful haha, but I'm okay. I wish the best for all of you, I'll check the thread out to get some news from your applications, good luck to you !

Thank you for your comfort ! Actually I realized I'm not the only one rejcted, for the moment there are 2 people accepted and 8 people rejected. Everyone is very shocked here, no one understands what happened, as you said, everyone was convinced that if you nailed the first screening, there were 99% of chance to get accepted in the end. We don't understand why this year, it's different, it's pretty unfair... Anyway I don't know for you, but considering the amont of people rejected, in France we are going to get back to the embassy to understand why so much people are rejected.

I emailed the embassy to understand why there so many people rejected this year. She told me they realized they have a budget lower than expected, and that the ministry chose the people with the best skills in Japanese. For information, the majority of my classmates and I have a level N2 from the jlpt exam. That means that Tokyo might chose people with a level equivalent to JLPT N1. We're just unlucky for this year
