Marrying Japanese woman of Korean nationality

Hello,
After 4 years my girlfriend and I are planning on getting married and having me relocate to Japan. One of her parents is Korean and she has a Korean passport but has been living in Japan since a little after she was born. Since she has been living there for so long and is practically a citizen would we be able to get married in Japan or would we have to wait for her to finish the process of getting a Japanese passort? - Thanks~!

You don't have to be Japanese to get married in Japan.

"Practically a citizen" does not equal being one, unless her other parent is also Japanese. Is he/she?

What's the rush? That is, why can't you (seem to) wait for the J passport?

My situation and yours is quite similar. I'm American and my girlfriend is Chinese, but she moved to Japan when she was young. She has permanent residence and could of naturalized to a Japanese passport, but just didn't need to. Anyway, we got married just recently so it's doable. The thing is, she had to go to her embassy in Tokyo to get a document. I think it's the same document that Americans have to get from their embassy that declares they're not already married and are able to marry. After that, we both went to our local city hall, filled out the form to get married. Oh, this needs 2 witness btw and seals if they have. Turn in the form, and wait two hours or have it sent to your address and you're married. BTW, remember to get a translation of your proof of marriage and have it notarized. This will be helpful if you ever decide to go back to your home country and need to apply for a spousal visa for your wife.

Not sure if the Korea has the same procedures as China, so your girlfriend should double check by calling her embassy.
