Map of prisoner of war deaths at a temple at Koyasan, Wakayama

I took this photo at the famous sightseeing area Koyasan in Wakayama a couple of years back.



Although I can read the Japanese, I can't quite figure out what it's trying to say. For those that can't read it, the bold writing says "Map of Prisoner of War Deaths". Then all the other tables are of countries. The column headings are as followed: "Place of death", "executed", "died of sickness", "accidental death", "suicide", "reason for death unknown", "total". The rows show the aparent number of deaths. Also, if you look up to the top right hand corner you'll see the overall total which is listed as 1159. This seems awfully low for the total number of allied POW deaths?? I couldn't find the figure myself but I it's probably in the hundreds of thousands going by what I know.

Maybe it's talking about the number of Japanese that died as POWs?

Anyone else have any idea what this is all about?

It seems to be the number of Japanese military prisoners (criminals - those sentenced guilty by allied forces, I guess), not the prisoners of war.
Number of ordinary POW who died abroad should be far bigger than this.
There seem to be number of monuments for the Japanese soldiers died during the WWII, according to the internet source.

Literal translation is "war criminals place of death sketch map".
The diagram at the right top shows the total, and those in places shows the number of death by cause (excusion, illness, accident, suicide, unkonwn).

The one you copied, Uncle Frank, shows the number by place in China.
ﾂ広窶愬陳、窶徒窶｢ﾂｽﾂ、ﾂ湘｣ﾅ?Cﾂ、ﾅ?ﾂｿﾅ津ｻﾂ、ﾃ?c窶配ﾂ、ﾅ?ﾂｿ窶配ﾂ、etc. (all Chinese name of place - except 窶佝椎?窶ｺ.) As other diagram show such title as France, Allied Countries, America, UK, Netherlands, etc. the title could mean the country (court?) that judged/sentenced to the Japanese soldiers. Most diagram shows 窶佝椎?窶ｺ Sugamo, where the prison for the war criminals was located.

Interesting. I would have thought that all the war criminals were tried and executed in Japan. Seemingly not?
