Awhile ago, I downloaded a japanese program in which you can type the romanji and it displays the characters in hiagrana or katanka. It also taught you Kanji with "kanji" everyday.

Could someone give me a link so I can download one of these wonderful programs? Otherwise, it's really too much hassle to just copy and paste each kana seperately.

Google for JWPce and Wakan. Both of them are excellent tools for doing exactly what you're talking about.

Practically every modern OS should have an IME available - did you have some trouble getting it to work or something?

Not everyone knows that those are available Paul. I had no idea until I saw one of my Chinese friends typing Chinese into Yahoo messenger and I asked him how he did it.

I was wondering if Microsoft offers an IME for Windows XP? I went to the MSN webpage, but it says in order to install the Japanese IME I have to have Office XP installed. I have Office 2003, but it's not Office XP. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a version that works on XP without the Office XP. Anyone have any ideas? I am currently using the JWPce, but I remember the Microsoft IME being a lot easier to use. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have a windows '98. My computer is old, so it doesn't come with one.

You should still be able to use JWPce. Did you find and install that?

はい、ふぁんっ。ありがとう ございます。

Hai, Fantt. Arigatou gozaimasu.

Yes, Fantt. Thank you very much.

PS: How do I get katakana to work on it? I only seem to be able to do hiragana.

Type in capital letters and it will come up in katakana.

What you want is the "MS Global IME 5.01" which can be downloaded. It's not as good as the ones you can use in Windows XP but it's better for writing in forums and stuff than using JWPce.

That will work for Internet Explorer and Outlook in Windows 98. If you want one that works system-wide (e.g., for other applications), you either need Windows 2000/XP or a Japanese version of Windows (any version).

And Outlook Express, MS Word, MS Excel and indeed any NON-Microsoft program that has made the effort. Including at least Mozilla and Firefox.
