Nearly 150,000 foreigners were illegally residing in Japan on expired visas as of the beginning of this year, the Justice Ministry said Friday.
As of Jan. 1, there were 149,785 foreigners staying in Japan without valid visas, down 21,054 or 12.3 percent from the year earlier, according to the ministry's Immigration Bureau.
South Korean nationals account for the largest number at 31,758, followed by Chinese (25,057) and Filipinos (24,741), accounting for more than half of illegally residing foreign nationals in total.

I thought illegal Korean residents would have significantly decreased after the visa waiver program for Korean people. I imagined a sort of statistical trick.

If Korean people show more patriatism to decrease illegal residents, 5 or 6 thoudsands overstayers which is the same level as the other Asian developed nations with VWPs as Taiwan, the 5-year 50% reduction policy by the government will succeed this year.

And the next step would be more VWPs for other Asian people.

Yes.
At least, people should realise that police reports in the places where they stayed more than 6 months are required (by many countries) when they want to emigrate to the US or Europe.
They should not create their bad reputation by themselves.
