JR East is considering a 10 yen fare increase for its Yamanote Line and other services, effective March 2026. The increase would raise the starting fare from 150 yen to 160 yen and apply to both standard tickets and commuter passes.

While JR East has seen a recovery in its railway business due to increased tourism, profits have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, the company aims to improve the profitability of its rural lines. To achieve this, JR East is considering a more consistent fare structure based on distance, which could lead to higher fares in metropolitan areas like Tokyo.

The operator plans to use the increased revenue from the price hike for safety measures and infrastructure maintenance, the sources said. JR East raised fares in March 2023 in parts of the Tokyo metropolitan area to improve station accessibility for people with disabilities. It also increased fares in line with consumption tax hikes. Among others in the JR group, Hokkaido Railway Co. will increase its starting fare by 10 yen to 210 yen, and Kyushu Railway Co. will introduce a 30 yen hike to 200 yen in April next year.
